Default masticular mysositis update

This is a forwarded message from a friend on a quilting group. I posted
a short while ago when she asked quilters for help with her dog. Here's
the update. --Lia

-----------------------------------------------

So many of you responded to my post about my dog, who was foaming at the
mouth and unable to eat, that I felt today I should send out an update.
Heidi was given anti-histamines, antibiotics (she had a high
temperature), Rimadryl (an anti-inflammatory) and a pill to coat her
stomach from damage form all of the above. This helped with her pain,
but not with the major problem of her not being able to eat. Although
she was very hungry, it looked as if her tongue was malfunctioning and
she couldn’t get the food to the back of her mouth so she could swallow.
We thought it might be Masticular Myositis, but the vet became
convinced that something was stuck deep down in her throat, where he
could not reach when he had sedated her to look. We had been inundated
this year with sharp, pointy, sticky seedpods from our cottonwoods this
year that stuck to Heidi’s feet and she had been biting away at them, so
one of the seedpods was the best guess. The vet then put her on
Prednisone to even further reduce any inflammation. We were giving her
12 pills a day for several days, a very difficult task when your dog has
difficulty swallowing. This morning Heidi was able to eat normally for
the first time in 12 days. She even went over and stole some of her
friend Jake’s food. I’m knocking on wood, but I think our beautiful
Heidi is going to be OK.

Thanks for all of you emails, it helped a lot to know that people cared.
