Sloefke,my dog ( a longhaired teckel )
Hi everyone,
I’m new to the forum so thanks in advance for any advice you might give me… I’m from Belgium by the way, its kind of weird how I got to this site/forum but those are just the ways internet works. As most of you, I have a very dear friend, nearly for te years now. My four legged friend is called “Sloefke” which means as much as Shoe, but then in a dialect. We gave him that name because his first toy we got him was shaped a shoe, and he played so much with it… I was going to say that the last few days have been heartbreaking, but its only been a couple of hours since we got some blood results back from our vet. A couple of weeks ago Sloefke started to be a little less active, not that he was super active before, but still…We also noticed his gums were turning more and more white-ish, so something was going on with his blood. We went to our vet, she took some blood an immediately thought it might be ratpoison. She gave him a good shot of vitamin K(because ratpoison stops the production of that) and something else that I don’t remember… Friday we went back to the vet,she took blood again and we all thought that he was looking a lot better again. This morning we got the blood results and they seem to have worsened. His red blood cells dropped again ,and the vet thinks the problem is two folded. 1) He vomits about one time a day, usually when he goes in the garden, he eats some grass and there his food is, largely undigested. The weird thing is Sloefke eats it again(I know its gross but taking away his food makes him angry) and then seems to digest it. He poo’s and pee’s normally so its all confusing really. The vet did mention a possible tumor on his stomach.... 2)Secondly his gums are still white-ish so his red blood cells aren’t going up much. The vet mentioned that his liver is “ruined”(god I hope I misunderstood that) and that he has 20% of his liver left. You probably wonder what I’m going to ask of all of you… Well the weird thing is that Sloefke is active, he does his usual things, no problems at all. He eats normal, he plays, he sleeps… It’s like he’s not that ill. I just don’t know what to do, it’s killing me. I don’t have to tell any of you how much a dog, my friend that I spend hours together with a day, means to you. I love my Sloef so much and I’m not at all ready to let go. So please, any advice or remarks are welcome… The time to act is now, if there is anything that could possibly make him better now is the time to it because he still has strength ! I don’t care about money at this point, I just want to save my best friend. Thanks in advance, -Michel. |

It's also important to know what other values are out of whack. It's hard to tell what's going on from your description. Could be autoimmune hemolytic anemia, cancer, poison, leptospirosis, tick disease, canine hepatitis, etc. Livers can repair themselves if you can get the disease process stopped. I'd ask for an X-ray or ultrasound so they can look at the internal organs. He eats normal, he plays, he sleeps… It’s like he’s not that ill. ........that's a good sign, really...........ask your vet to do more testing. Your vet must have some ideas as to diagnosis. Talk with your vet. Ask questions. Take notes. all the best buglady take out the dog before replying |
