Default Dog non-stop barking in car

Hi everybody

My parents recently bought a rescue dog. He loves getting in to a car
but when the car is started and moves off he barks non-stop and goes
ballistic, sometimes even managing to get out of his harness. Speaking
to him doesn't do anything. Other than giving him sedatives every time
he's in the car can anyone think of a way of stopping this barking/
anxiety? He is a young labrador / staff cross so is quite strong. If
the journey takes one hour he will bark all the way there and all the
way home. When food is offered he quickly scoffs it then immediately
goes back to barking. When being walked he does not bark at cars or
get anxious at passing traffic.

Please help!
Many thanks
Popey

It needs to fit better or he needs to be in a crate.

Squirt bottles and other varieties of corrective devices can be very
useful, but if stress is causing it, good exercise before the car ride,
Rescue Remedy to take the edge off without "drugging" and OBEDIENCE
TRAINING should all make a huge difference. Consult a trainer in person
and train the dog, adding "quiet" to his list of commands.
