Some people enjoy the method that comes along with "clicker training", while others don't. There is nothing magic about a clicker, just as there is nothing magic about any tool. Choosing training approaches that work for you and your dog is the thing that makes the most sense. A trainer can help you with that. Adding on to Janet's comments - There's also a difference in clicker training as to whether you are using it to mark desired behavior or to shape it. You'll want to know what the use of the clicker is for any clicker class that you take. I don't use a clicker. But I have seen people who use it to shape behavior who get some amazing things out of their dogs. They love their clickers. I'm amazed. But not enough to use a clicker. I guess my philosophy is close to Janet's. I think these people are good trainers who would get those amazing behaviors out of their dogs with any number of methods. It's a tool. One that works very well for some people and some dogs. If you find a clicker class that you like, give it a try. If it doesn't work for you, find another class and another method that does. Judy |
