Default Yet another rescue - "Lucky" - New pictures!

Through the well intentioned efforts of my friend, I have once again become
involved in a dog rescue. This young female had been "marginally" owned by
someone in a poor area of Baltimore, and she has had two litters of pups in
her short life. Someone called Animal Control, and they took her to the
Pound. Helene contacted her friend, who arranged for us to rescue the poor
pooch, so today at noon we picked her up. She warmed up to me fairly
quickly, and I took her for a short walk on which she relieved herself of a
lot of poo and pee. She is a little bit fearful of touch, so sometimes she
flinches, but shows no signs of aggression. She was shedding profusely, and
large clumps of fur came off as we petted her, and we removed about a dozen
ticks. We named her "Lucky", as indeed she is. If not for us, she would
almost certainly have been sent to the bridge by now.

Lucky reluctantly got into the back seat of the car with me (probably her
first car ride, except for the Pound wagon), while Helene drove out of the
city. She sat very nicely, and leaned against me while I petted her. She
seemed to relax and enjoy the one hour ride to a place in the country,
where Helene's friend has two horses, an old dog and a puppy, and at least
30 cats and kittens, some only a few days old, and all rescued.

When Lucky and the big old dog Jake locked eyes through the fence, they
both engaged in a ferocious display of barking and show of teeth, but we
kept them apart and they settled down quickly. We had hoped to be able to
have Lucky stay in a fenced area until we could get her into the Fallston
Animal Rescue Movement (FARM), but when left alone she attempted and nearly
succeeded in climbing the fence and escaping. So, we had to make alternate
plans, and we took her to my vet's (Companion Animal Care), where she will
get necessary shots, an exam, and boarding for two nights while we figure
out what to do next.

Now, we are trying to come up with a workable plan. I like the dog, and it
would be nice if I could keep her, but I don't know how Muttley would react
to another dog. They are about the same size, and she even looks a little
bit like Muttley. My friend and I started on the fence project on the hill,
but the heat and humidity forced us to stop for the day and attempt to
continue next week. Even if it were complete, it would probably not be
suitable for long term unsupervised containment, being composed of 4' high
goat fence, and located quite a hike from the house. I could probably tie
her up outside, as I did with Muttley when I first got him, but that is not
a very good option either. I think she would be OK inside the house, but I
would not risk that unless she and Muttley had some time together with no
major issues. And spending $20 a night for boarding is not a viable
long-term option. Helene has a finicky declawed cat, and is unwilling to
subject her to the stress of having a dog in the house. So, we are hoping
that FARM may be able to find a foster home soon.

Oh, I did promise pictures:

http://www.smart.net/~pstech/Lucky/Lucky.htm

If anyone has any suggestions, please let me know. Now that Helene and I
have become involved with this dog, she has gotten her paws around our
hearts, and we are committed to finding a good home for her. She is really
a very sweet young girl, and seems eager to please. She seemed to calm down
and feel comfortable with us very quickly, and even rolled over on her back
like Muttley enjoys doing. She will be a fine pet for someone.

Nice looking horse in the background.
The dog's body shape reminds me of a Chesepeake Bay Retriever's. She looks
like she has not been starving anyway. Good of you and your friend to
rescue her.

Man purse? Camera case? Whatever.

Looks like a man purse to me.

And Schoen seems like the kind of guy who would wear a man purse.

If it looks like a duck, walks like a duck...

Nothing wrong with a man carrying
something to carry stuff in. it makes sense.

Absolutely not. That's why *wallets* were invented!

Doesn't make them less manly.

Yeah, it does. It makes them look like lost German tourists. The
only things missing from Schoen's lost German tourist ensemble are the
sandals and socks! And he probably left them in the car.

Is he supposed to carry a backpack instead?

Unless he actually enjoys having people laugh at him, yes!

Even a freakin' suitcase would be better than that man purse.

Look, Schoen's never going to find a good woman until he stops acting
so freakin' bizarrely.

It's for his own good!

Lose the man purse, Schoen!

cell phone, check book, pencils, notepad, asprin, comb, handgun, extra mag
sorta/kinda fits hard in a wallet

Cell phone goes in my pocket. Don't carry a check book, pencil,
notepad, comb, etc. on my person.

That what glove compartments are for.

I do carry a handgun at times, but in my waist band.

And *I* don't require "extra mags."

You should have started her off on your "walk" doin
the Hot & Cold EXXXORCISE for a few minutes till she
was paying attention to you and then started into the
Family Pack Leadership EXXXORCISE and installed the
come command as a conditional reflex.

Well, I have not yet learned "Howe" to do that, and I didn't want to risk
doing it wrong. Also, I was only asked to go along as "muscles" to help
with physically handling the dog, so did not want to interfere. Howe-ever,
I was able to control her without using any forceful methods, except to
restrain her from getting loose. She was not trying to escape, but was
anxious to enjoy her freedom from confinement, and to do her business.

She is a little bit fearful of touch,

Then you shouldn't be touching her unless
she comes over to be touched. You'd have
got her over all that had you done the
preliminary EXXXORCISES straight off the
bat:

She probably had been abused, and only flinched a little bit when one of us
touched her unexpectedly from behind. When she saw us first, she was OK.

so sometimes she flinches, but shows no signs of
aggression. She was shedding profusely, and large

as indeed she is. If not for us, she would almost
certainly have been sent to the bridge by now.

You mean the dog rescuers at the humane
society woulda MURDERED her {}: ~ (

This was the city Pound, not the SPCA, but her fate would likely have been
the same either place. Seems like every place is full of cast away critters

Lucky reluctantly got into the back seat of the car
with me (probably her first car ride, except for the
Pound wagon), while Helene drove out of the city.

From what I've read of Helen, her thinkin abHOWET

HOWE dogs an kats should be handled is quite toxic.
You'd do well to teach her my methods.

Later that day, after seeing her and her friend scream and holler at the
dogs when they had their barking match, I tried to explain some of the
basics to her. It seemed so obvious that their excited and negative tone
would just encourage them to continue. Jake was probably protecting his
home turf, while Lucky was defending her new friends Helene and me from the
threat.

She sat very nicely, and leaned against me while I
petted her. She seemed to relax and enjoy the one
hour ride to a place in the country, where Helene's
friend has two horses, an old dog and a puppy, and
at least 30 cats and kittens, some only a few days
old, and all rescued.

Sounds nice.

When Lucky and the big old dog Jake locked eyes
through the fence, they both engaged in a ferocious
display of barking and show of teeth,

Opposite sex aggression is THE MOST ABNORMAL,
UNNATURAL behavior in the history of creation.
UNLESS they've been TRAINED to aggress upon any
trespasser, like HOWE my own German Shepherd
Bitch chased off a suitor who'd jumped my 4'
fence when she was in heat {}: ~ )

but we kept them apart and they settled down quickly.

You should have distracted and praised the first
instance of barking or suspiciHOWES behavior and
they'd have made pals NEARLY INSTANTLY.

I did praise and speak softly and calmly to Lucky, which seemed to help.

We had hoped to be able to have Lucky stay in a
fenced area until we could get her into the Fallston
Animal Rescue Movement (FARM), but when left alone
she attempted and nearly succeeded in climbing the
fence and escaping.

NO PROBLEMO! You can train ANY dog not to attempt
to climb fences or escape their perimeter NEARLY
INSTANTLY simply by distracting and praising EACH
glance or step towards at the prohibited border.

So, we had to make alternate plans,

No, you FAILED to FOLLOW THE METHOD
PRECISELY on several counts from the git
go, Paul.

and we took her to my vet's (Companion Animal
Care), where she will get necessary shots,

If she's been livin on the streets she's PROBABLY
IMMUNE to most DIS-EASES. Perhaps your hard
earned dough woulda been better spent investing
it in titer tests to determine what her NEEDS for
vaccinations ARE.

an exam, and boarding for two nights

ETHICKAL veterinarians DO NOT BOARD HEELTHY critters.

while we figure out what to do next.

You shoulda stopped at a couple of parking lots
or parks on the way back to your HOWES and
repeated the H&C and FPLX and installation of
the come command and taken her straight back
and introduced her to Muttley and her new HOWES.

Now, we are trying to come up with a workable plan.
I like the dog, and it would be nice if I could keep
her, but I don't know how Muttley would react to
another dog.

THAT'S ABSURD! Dogs an kats DO NOT HAVE
temperament and behavior problems that AIN'T
CAUSED BY MISHANDLING, Paul.

They are about the same size, and she even looks a
little bit like Muttley. My friend and I started on
the fence project on the hill, but the heat and
humidity forced us to stop for the day and attempt
to continue next week. Even if it were complete, it
would probably not be suitable for long term
unsupervised containment, being composed of 4' high
goat fence, and located quite a hike from the house.

That's ABSURD! You can TRAIN ANY DOG not to WANT
to ESCAPE your perimeter, fence or no fence, NEARLY
INSTANTLY.

I could probably tie her up outside, as I did with
Muttley when I first got him, but that is not a very
good option either.

Perhaps it's the linear thinking required to be an electronics
engineer that prohibits you from EXXXTRAPOLATING on the
METHOD, Paul.

NUTHIN CHANGES, Paul.

It's ALL THE SAME SAME, you just gotta IMPROVISE
to suit the individual species and its environment:

I think she would be OK inside the house,

Duh-Oh! PLEASE! PLEASE! PLEASE! DON'T DO THIS
TO ME, Paulie!! ALL temperament and behavior
problems ARE CAUSED BY MISHANDLING, NOT DOGS.

but I would not risk that unless she and Muttley
had some time together with no major issues.

It takes MOMENTS to make ANY critters pals with
each other, ESPECIALLY opposite sex dogs OR dogs
an KATS, like Photon.

The ONLY difficulty is USIN THE BRAINS G-d gave
you to FOLLOW THE doGdameneD METHODS I
gave you, PRECISELY.

And spending $20 a night for boarding
is not a viable long-term option.

Oy!

Helene has a finicky declawed cat,

No. Declawing kats MAKES THEM AFRAID. You
can TRAIN fearful kats JUST LIKE HOWE you
can TRAIN ANY CRITTER to FEEL SAFE, Paulie.

and is unwilling to subject her to the
stress of having a dog in the house.

You should stay far the heel AWAY from HELLen.

So, we are hoping that FARM may be able
to find a foster home soon.

Oh, you think "FOSTERING" dogs temporarilly to be
RE HOWESED in a few days or weeks AFTER the
critter has BONDED in his "FOSTER" HOWES is
HUMANE, Paul??

THAT'S INSANE.

Oh, I did promise pictures:

http://www.smart.net/~pstech/Lucky/Lucky.htm

Sorry, I ain't got time to play arHOWEND lookin
at pictures UNLESS they're germane to a problem.

If anyone has any suggestions, please let me know.

Now that Helene and I have become involved with
this dog, she has gotten her paws around our hearts,
and we are committed to finding a good home for her.

Don't allHOWE HELLen near your critters.

She is really a very sweet young girl, and seems
eager to please. She seemed to calm down and feel
comfortable with us very quickly, and even rolled
over on her back like Muttley enjoys doing.

That rolling over is usually SUBMISSIVE behavior.
HOWEver, Muttley does it to sooth his neck from
where he's been jerked and choked according to
janet's EXXXPERT INSTRUCTIONS on janet's
custom made pronged spiked pinch choke collar {}: ~ (

She will be a fine pet for someone.

HOWE abHOWET YOU, Paul?

Takin care of two dogs is EZ. So's takin
care of three dogs. Four dogs too, Paul.
FIVE makes it a little bit of work. All my
adult life I've always NEEDED three working
dogs to suit my schedule and requirements
for always havin a well rested dog fit for duty.

We'll see how it goes. I talked to Helene awhile tonight and I might be
able to convince her to let the dog stay in her basement. She is very
distraught and makes all kinds of excuses why she can't do this or allow
that. I am trying to take a "tough love" approach and make her fully own
her decision to rescue this dog, and not expect others to make sacrifices
for the sake of the animal. Before I met "Lucky", it would not have been
hard to just "let it go", and allow one more dog among thousands to be
euthed. But now I have met her, and have seen her express trust, calmness,
and even joy (which her spontaneous roll seemed to be), so now I feel a
commitment to do what is right. Tomorrow we will be taking some action, and
hope to have a good short term solution for the next several days, and
eventually a happy long term ending.

Paul and Muttley
