Hi-

I have a question about dog whistles.

I have a yellow lab who is already well trained to voice commands and
hand signals. I also wanted to try working with him using a whistle,
mostly 'cause I understand that whistles are effective at long
distances. When my dog is out with me and my horse, sometimes I'll
need to get his attention from a bit of a distance. Once I have his
attention, he responds well to my hand signals.

Anyway, I bought a "silent" dog whistle at Petsmart. There is nothing
silent about it at all. It is perfectly audible to me. Are there
really silent whistles that only dogs can hear, or are all dog
whistles in human hearing range, too?

If anyone knows of a truly silent dog whistle, could you tell me the
brand or where you bought it?

Have you tried it with other people? Different people have
different abilities to hear high-frequency sounds, and you
may be more sensitive than most. I'd check around before
assuming that it's the whistle.

Most silent whistle are adjustable. The top turns to change the
frequency for dog hearing only. Try it. I've had a few and they were
purchased who knows where, but no place special!

Is it important that the whistle be silent? In herding trials the
whistled commands are perfectly audible even to me (high range deficit
in right ear).

Check out herding whistles - they're not silent but are not
at all annoying and carry long distances.

-Melinda, yes, even my friends can hear the sound.
-Janet, I have tried all the different ways to effect the pitch and
sound and can't seem to find any way to make it inaudible.
-Kathleen, I guess it's not essential that it be silent, but I just
sort of expected it to be, and I would prefer it to be.
