The greyhound situation is out of control
[]
Or it would have been if they weren't such well-behaved dogs. When I went into town last night to get some groceries I was kind of surprised to see a bunch of greyhounds in the supermarket parking lot. And then this morning when I drove out to pick up the dogs from the boarding kennel I saw a bunch of cars with greyhound- related bumperstickers. So, obviously the Grapehound people had arrived. Later this morning I loaded Image in the car and drove to Taughannock Falls State Park, where I met up with Chris Jung and Mustang Sally, and their respective dogs. And a mind-boggling number of greyhounds. Greyhounds *everywhere*, and not too many people had only one. I've been in situations with that number of huskies and it was pandemonium, but the greyhounds were quiet, well-behaved, apparently obedient, and sufficiently un-doglike that I'm starting to wonder what they actually are. They're also incredibly elegant-looking dogs, and each and every one of them had a muscle-y butt. I'd met Chris before (Emmett and Pablo were in a class together) and so knew to expect an elevated sleaze level (she claims to be from Iowa but you have to wonder about that accent), but even though Sally goes by "Mustang" I was still pretty surprised by how she chose to dress (not to mention the hair teased out to -------- there). Still, it didn't seem to interfere with her getting down the Gorge Trail with a couple of dogs and she seemed to cope pretty well with the hot weather even with the leather, so more power to her. Anyway, I had a *great* time (even without grapes) and I'm already looking forward to next year. -- Melinda Shore - Software longa, hardware brevis - Prouder than ever to be a member of the reality-based community |

The greyhound situation is out of control
Melinda,
It sounds like a beautiful day was had by all. It must seem funny to see so many Greyhounds in one place. (or any breed for that matter) I am so happy to hear that it sounds like a very successful event. I am sure it is nice to meet people that you have known for awhile via the internet. I don't really know what I picture when I think of Mustang Sally, but somehow your description surprised me. My sister is seriously considering a pair of Greyhounds it won't be for a long while because she has one dog left that is definitely not a pack animal and I am putting it mildly. My sister contacted the Bradenton/Sarasota rescue group about GH's and she was put off a bit. They wanted her profile so they could choose dogs for her. She won't go for that and I am sure there is more to the story. She will want to choose her own. Thanks for the story. I am glad you all had a fun day and I hope the Grapehound Benefit was a super success. Be Free.....Judy |

The greyhound situation is out of control
My sister has a neighbor who has two greyhounds. She swears she's only ever
heard the one bark once the whole they have lived there. Beautiful dogs so sleek and graceful. Celeste "Melinda Shore" wrote in message ... The greyhound situation is out of control
I was surprised when my sister decided on GH's. They are sleek and
beautiful. We had just never dicussed owning GH's. She was having her 17 year old dog euthanized. She was carrying her lifeless little body out to the truck. She was a BC mix. Anyway, my sister was blocked by a white Greyhound. They just stood there and looked at each other for a moment. It was surreal. My sister later even wondered if it had happened. The GH's face was so sweet and comforting. Months later my sister finally got the nerve to call the Vet's and ask if the dog was ever there or still there. Sure enough, it was still there and as suspected it was a donor dog and they did not want to give it up for adoption. Be Free.....Judy |

True, Sally did wear a rather, a-hem, unconventional outfit for a dog walk but she certainly knows how to worked it. Not many women can hike with spike heels and that much leather. Of course Melinda is one to talk about inappropriate hiking attire. You can't tell me that breastplates wouldn't chafe something fierce in this kind of heat and humidity. Anyway, there really were a gazillion greyhounds so Image and Lucy stood out. I could tell Melinda was disappointed as she was hoping to meet Lucy the Anti-Lassie but instead got Lucy the Demure & Ladylike. Oh well, it's lot easier to live with Lucy the Demure. Image was also quite the polite girl but had a different understanding of the purpose of our walk to the Taughnnock Falls and back. Image's job as she understood it was to be in front, lead the way and keep this wagon train moving. This girl does not dawdle or slack-off. When Music or Nicky (Sally's very sweet and polite greyhounds) stopped for a pee or poop break, I'm pretty sure Image was drumming her toes and checking her watch. She wasn't obnoxious about it but she's much more type A than Lucy who took advantage of breaks to pose. I almost missed our get together, as around 6:45 that morning I found an enormous black Great Dane wandering on highway 366. A very sweet and goofy guy (who I immediately nick-named Big Boy), I traced his owner (via our new tenant who is a vet tech at the vet hospital named on his rabies tags) but the owner wasn't home and there was no place to leave him. A neighbor of the owner suggested I tie Big Boy out but after seeing his reaction after being tied up just briefly (worked himself into a ropey-spit-flinging frenzy) I wasn't comfortable with doing that. I ended up taking him to the SPCA where I knew he would be safe. I heard that his owner picked him up in the early afternoon. Chris (and what's this about me being sleazy?) -- |

You can't tell me that breastplates wouldn't chafe something fierce in this kind of heat and humidity. Between all you peoplez and dogs, no one could figure out a way to work a camera? Image was also quite the polite girl but had a different understanding of the purpose of our walk to the Taughnnock Falls and back. Image's job as she understood it was to be in front, lead the way and keep this wagon train moving. That sounds very familiar. It's not a fun outing, it's a job, and the whole point is to get from Point A to Point B as fast as possible, so it can be moved into the 'Done' pile. I was surprised the first time I encountered it. him. A neighbor of the owner suggested I tie Big Boy out but after seeing his reaction after being tied up just briefly (worked himself into a ropey-spit-flinging frenzy) Pan says that's the appropriate reaction to being tied out. Something about the right place for a dog being the couch. I wasn't comfortable with doing that. I ended up taking him to the SPCA where I knew he would be safe. I heard that his owner picked him up in the early afternoon. I wonder how he got out in the first place. Glad that it turned out well, though. Chris (and what's this about me being sleazy?) I'm sure the rest of us want to know as well. Suja |
