Default Garlic in dog's diet

Heather Noel said in rec.pets.dogs.health:

I've heard of adding garlic oil (from capsules) to a dog's
diet in conjunction with other flea repellants used on the
pet. The garlic is supposed to repel fleas that bite the
dog as once they taste the garlic in the blood, they will
leave well enough alone. #1 is there any proof of this

No.

and
#2 what amount of garlic oil would one give to a 55 pound
dog and how often?

Garlic is purported to be healthy for a number of reasons, but
its ability to repel parasites (other than vampires) remains
unproven. IIRC, Whole Dog Journal recommended one medium sized
clove per day for a dog of your's size. In the article, they
write that too much garlic can kill the beneficial bacteria in a
dog's gut.

Garlic is one of the best things you can eat and your dog but not too much
for the dog

I don't see why garlic should be more dangerous to Saints than it is to
other breeds. Can you please give us more details of why garlic shouldn't be
given to them?

It is well known, however, that onions are toxic to dogs in general. But
garlic is far less dangerous than regular onions, and a clove per day for a
grown, medium sized dog isn't hazardous at all. That is, unless the dog
suffers from anemia or other blood-related deseases, because onions make the
blood "thin" by affecting the red blood cells.

I feed my dog a clove of fresh garlic daily during summer, and 2-3 cloves
weekly the rest of the year..
