Default Diet Suggestions?

Greetings all.

I have a 8 year old Weimaraner that has a (growing) list of health
problems.
Theo came to live with me aprox 10 months ago and was described as
having behavior problems. He came with several bags of pills and special
food?
He was being treated for hyperthyroid problems and allergies and was 10
to 15 pounds overweight.
4 weeks ago he had emergency surgery and had part of his liver removed.
He has since made a very rapid recovery and is doing very well.
Everything seems to effect his diet. Weight gain or stimulation of
appetite are side effects of all his medications.
The vet now has him on a protein reduced diet (for the liver) that is a
mix of a dry food that is vegetarian and a low protein canned product. I
expect him to lose weight now because he hates it.
I am now concerned about his nutritional requirements? Adding
supplements seems like just more pills to hide in his food or sneak by
his gag reflex.
Suggestions for low protein, low fat, low carb foods and ideas for
rewards or treats would be helpful. Is there anything I should avoid
giving him as well?

Gordon

P.S. Behavior is not one of his problems. He gets a littly moody if he
doesn't get enough execise or attention and he is protective of his bowl
and his bed.
So am I. I hope nobody has plans for a special home for me.

Gordon:
Consider joining one of the weim lists, either the Weimaraners list on
yahoogroups.com or the email list at www.weim.net Lots of weim folks with
years of experience in Weims, especially knowledgeable about rescues and
health issues.

I am a bit perplexed by your request for suggestions for foods that are low
in both protein, fat and carbohydrates. Food consists of protein, fat and
carbohydrates, plus water. There are no other ingredients, so what you're
basically asking for is food consisting of indigestible ingredients and
water. :-))

I have heard of many dogs that have gotten rid of hyperthyroid problems and
allergies simply by switching to a raw, meat based diet without grains or
carbs/fiber from vegetable sources. You may read more about this he

For $150, Dr. Remillard of http://www.petdiets.com/ will consult with
your dog's vet and you and develop a nutrionally complete diet. She
has all the right credentials.

Roxanne, you linked to a site that is full of lies. API is a biased

He came with several bags of pills and special
food?

..........what are the pills your pup is taking?

He was being treated for hyperthyroid problems and allergies and was 10
to 15 pounds overweight.

..........do you mean hypothyroid (low functioning thyroid)?

4 weeks ago he had emergency surgery and had part of his liver removed.
He has since made a very rapid recovery and is doing very well.

.......yikes! Glad to hear he's doing better. Why did they have to take out
part of the liver?

I'd say the kibble industry is every bit as biased... ;-)

Precisely. In fact any multi million dollar industry should at least be
taken with some degree of skeptism. At least that is the way I feel.

From Kraft, to Phillip Morris, to Miller, to Merck.

Let's face it they are in it for the money and in reality
could give a rats behind about longterm use. As long
as the stocks are doing well that's really all the biggies
care about. JMO.
