Default medicine

My dog was on prednisone that I bought from the vet when the dog was
examined. The vet said that they would write a prescription without coming
in so that I could buy it online but when I ordered the online pharmacy said
the vet would not prescribe without another exam. The pharmacy rep said that
they run into this often, i.e., if you buy the drugs from the vet you do not
have to have an exam/office visit but if you buy from online you do.
Is there somewhere that I can get the drug without visiting the vet again?
The drug helped the dogs ear and skin problems but I don't like the vet
practice. Larry

Do you have an actual prescription (not the empty bottle from the vet, but a
written prescription)? You can have it filled at any pharmacy - pred is cheap.

OTOH, keeping animals (or people) on pred long term is not ideal. Getting to
the root of the allergy is a better thing to do. Allergy testing, trial and
error (feeding trials and such), can help you do that without loading your dog
up with dangerous prednisone (which can adversely affect so many things!).

How long has it been since your dog was in to see the vet. He/she can only
refill a prescription or authorize for refills for only so long before he is
required by his licensing board to re-examine the pet. In our state the
doctor must prove a valid doctor/patient/client relationship which includes
timely examinations (6 mo to a year depending on the med) in order for the
vet not to risk losing his/her license. At times we have to refuse the
online pharmacy's request to refill an old prescription because we haven't
seen the pet in over a year. Then they never tell the client the truth.
Instead they usually make it sound like the vet is giving them the shaft.

The pharmacy rep said that

Crap. Their way of slamming vets. If the vet wants to practice veterinary
medicine he/she has laws to abide by. You should ask your vet why they
wouldn't authorize and not take the online rep's word as truth.

Then find another vet. Although pred can work wonders for skin conditions,
it can also do damage if not monitored properly. The cause of the problem
needs to be addressed as well. Allergies? Food and/or environmental? Was a
skins craping done?

Pred is cheap and any pharmacy can fill the script, but if it's dated some
time ago, they may not.

I agree Janet!

You have to be patient with food allergies. Recently, too tighten up my
dog's stools, I added 3/4 of a tablespoon of corn starch to his diet per
day. The cornstarch worked but within two days he starting scratching to the
point of bleeding. Aside from the changing pollens in the air the only thing
that I could think of that was different was the corn starch. So we
dicontinued the corn starch and it took about 4 days before we noticed a
large reduction in his scratching. (We had put him on benadryl tablets and
because a tablet is only effective for about 7 hrs we would wait and see how
he did between doses.)

So, if two days on corn starch could produce 4 days of scratching you
will have to be patient if your dog has had a longer exposure
to some allergen.

The Baytril I got at the vets cost just over $6/pill; online they can be
bought for just over $2/pill. I believe like auto shops that make much of
their profit on part that the vets make much on products sold.
The problem with the dog is chronic ear infection; the prednisone helped the
swelling of the ear canal to allow the fluid to drain. The good side affect
was that the "ickies" on her skin cleared up after a couple days.
I had the dog in for exam and bought the medicines from them and was told to
come back in four days. I asked if I could get the medicine from online and
they said that would be fine. But after I ordered it the online pharmacy
said the vet would not authorize until I bought the dog in again. I talked
to vets office and they said that I must have miss understood.
The vet suggested that a operation at $2000 would cure the dogs ear problem
but I have a friend that had three operations on his cockers ears and the
dog ended up deaf.
I would take her to another vet at $40 per visit if I thought it would be
any different. I just would like to have the tools to take care of her
myself.
I grandchildren's doctor said that the newest thought on children's ear
infection is to not give antibiotics but to let the infection run it's
coarse. It didn't work on one of the children but did on the next. So I
don't want to over medicate but feel that I can take of my dog best.
Thanks for you input.
