OT- soda, HFCS, and sugar
The question was why soda manufacturers use high fructose corn syrup
when so many consumers prefer the taste of cane sugar enough to stock up on the cane sugar product when and where they can get it. Is it cost, availability, ease in manufacturing, or something else? I said I'd ask over at rec.foods.cooking. The answer is, apparently, more complicated and more political than I care to sum up here. (In case y'all haven't noticed, I don't do political on usenet.) If y'all want to go over there to have a look, be my guest. The title of the thread is "HFCS and sugar". --Lia |

OT- soda, HFCS, and sugar
Lia,
Thanks for doing the great detective work to determine why soda manufacturers use HFCS instead of cane sugar, when it appears cane sugar is in demand. You said the answer is posted in a thread at rec.foods.cooking. You also said that the answer is more complicated and political than you care to post here. I am going to get a glass of Root Beer and I am on my way to check it out. I admire your choice not to discuss politics in a use-net group. Thanks for checking into it. I really am curious. Melinda,
I thought it was just me, when I read the item Lia directed us to. The thread in rec.food.cooking about why soda manufacturers use HCFS more often than cane sugar. I did not think it was that complicated. However, I did enjoy reading the thread, anyway. Maybe, the too political part was our embargo against sugar cane from Cuba in the 30's Each to their own, I can understand being uncomfortable with a variety of topics in use-net groups. Farm subsidies, corn prices rising because of use of corn-based ethanol in biofuels, theory that HFCS is used because it allegedly blocks receptors in brain that turn down appetite (leading people to eat/drink more), possible relationship to obesity epidemic in US, competition with home-grown sugar sources (beets), corn production allegedly worse for land and more polluting than some other crops, MBTE vs ethanol in gasoline, energy production/consumption/waste, the tourist industry in Hawaii ... (stopped reading) Oh yeah, lots of political fodder there, especially when you factor in thread drift. OT- soda, HFCS, and sugar
Ya know all of this talk about sugar cane has made me recall fond
memories of my grandaddy. He would cut stalks of sugar cane and cut the stalk up into pieces for me and my sisters when we were kids. We thought that was big fun. I don't think my crowns could take it nowadays. I am sure it doesn't taste as good as I recall, plus I would make my Dentist even more wealthy if I tried it. Be Free.....Judy |

I don't know for sure, but I'd bet that a 6" stick of sugar cane has less sugar by weight in it than a 12 oz soda. There are 4 grams of sugar per teaspoon, ~38-48 grams of sugar per 12 oz soda, or about the equivalent of ~9.5 - 12 teaspoons of sugar in one 'typical' soda. (I don't know the precise conversion factor for HFCS to granulated sugar.) I am quite sure you are right about a can of soda containing more sugar than a 6 inch stalk of sugar cane. My reference about the dentist is because I am old and my teeth are old, shored up with crowns and a bridge. Gnawing on sugar cane is like gnawing on uhhhhhh a corn husk without the corn only worse I am sure it would pop my crowns off!!!! Be Free.....Judy |
