Default Dog grooming herself?

Hi all:

My girlfriend's dog (a cute Cavalier King Charles Spaniel) has a habit
of grooming herself like a cat does. After, for example, she eats,
she will lick her paws and rub them over her face, repeating several
times. I've never seen this behavior in a dog and we were just
curious about it. Is that normal for this breed of dog.

She's adopted and we are wondering if maybe she was raised in a
household having cats and learned that behavior from them.

Thanks in advance for any response.

I don't know if it is 'normal' for dogs, but all five of the dogs
(3 Chihuahuas, a GSD, a Lab) who have shared my house have done this.

Balim, our Englilsh Cocker Spaniel, does this--though she's not very adept
at it. It's usually a signal to me that she needs grooming.

(In that respect I suppose she has me well trained...)

Our dogs have all done this. They have been a variety of mixes.

I've got an 8 yr old Pomeranian named Buddy. The first time I
observed him licking the inside of a front paw and then rubbing his
face with it, I thought he was having some type of weird seizure,
since he kept repeating the exact same motions. When I figured out
what he was really doing, I had a good laugh on myself.

This is normal behavior for dogs. They use their dew claws to rake burrs
from the hair on the head and neck. If your dog has no dew claws the
behavior suggests that it needs to have its head brushed.
