Default County prosecutor to seek indictments in Vick case

NFL Wire Notes | County prosecutor to seek indictments in Vick case
By The Associated Press

RICHMOND, Va. — The prosecutor in the rural county where suspended Atlanta
quarterback Michael Vick has admitted to bankrolling a dogfighting operation
plans to present evidence to a grand jury today that could possibly lead to
indictments.

"Yes, I'm presenting matters to the grand jury that involve dogfighting at
1915 Moonlight Road," Surry County Commonwealth's Attorney Gerald G.
Poindexter told The Associated Press on Monday night.

Moonlight Road is the address of the two-story home on 15 mostly undeveloped
acres that had been host to "Bad Newz Kennels" since 2001. It is where
dozens of pit bulls were found in April, and where they were trained. Some
dogs were executed.

"Most of the matters that I'm presenting have already been admitted in sworn
statements authored by the defendants in the federal proceedings,"
Poindexter said.

He didn't detail the exact indictments he will pursue but said the local
investigation and the federal investigation largely focused on different
crimes.

"The killing of dogs is one of those statutory prohibitions. Dogfighting is
a crime, the mistreatment of animals is a crime, so you could take your
pick, or take them all," Poindexter said before cutting the conversation
short. "I don't have anything else to say about it. I'm through with it.
Hopefully, it's coming to an end."

Vick, his co-defendants and lawyers are not permitted to attend the closed
proceeding.

Vick, 27, and three co-defendants already have pleaded guilty to conspiracy
charges in the case, and all are awaiting sentencing in federal court before
the end of the year.

Vick, who faces up to five years in prison on the federal charges, also has
been indefinitely suspended without pay by the league and been dropped by
his major sponsors, including Nike.

The local charges, and a conviction, could spell an end to any hope Vick has
of resuming his career after serving a likely federal-prison term.

This news item truly surprised me. My contention is Mr Poindexter and
half the damn county knew what was going on at the Vick compound. It is
alleged that some of the local police and other officials may have even
attended dog fights at Vick's home.
Since you posted this item, it is my understanding that the grand jury
came down with 2 indictments. They each carry a sentence of 5 years
max. The grand jury could only come up with 2 out of a choice of 10
counts to indict Vick on. That is kind of surprising to me.
I do hope he is found guilty or most likely will cop a plea, since it
involves his friends. The same friends that have rolled on him in the
Federal indictment. They are charged in the state indictments also. I
know that it will be less pleasant in the State prison than at Club Fed.
Billy Martin (Vick's attorney) is currently at work to make sure his
client isn't being charged twice for the same crimes.
How many dogs were killed? How many dogs were confiscated? Naahhhhh,
I don't think they can charge him too many times.

Billy Martin's got his hands full, what with Sen. Craig and his *mens room*
incident in Minneapolis, and now Vick got smacked for testing positive in
his random drug testing. The judge slapped a curfew on him.
