Doggy likes his ramp now
If you remember, I had trouble getting him to climb the ramp to the backseat
at first. He's doing much better now. I began by pushing the ramp down into the cushion on the right side to help stabilize it, but then I filled the well between the back seat and the front seat with old couch cushions and a pillow laid across. The ramp is now supported more or less across it's width. It's much less tippy and doesn't need me to hold it down against the backseat cushion. I also am able to angle the ramp in swept wing fashion because of the cushions. Looked at from the dog's point of view, the ramp when perpendicular to the car sent him straight up into the door edge. No doubt this contributed to his fear. Car doors on modern sedans tend to bow in and that's why he was looking at the edge of the door. With the ramp in the swept back position, he walks up into an open space. I don't know why manufacturers ignore backseat dogs, but they seem to make almost all their ramps for the hatch area of SUV's. I see a lot of dogs riding in backseats. It wouldn't be that hard to put an attachment on the end of the ramps to make it more seat friendly. It could even have a swivel for the last foot or so so that you wouln't need to fill in the well. |

I don't think that was really called for. It seems like a lot of people have been very reactive and hostile lately. Maybe the change in the weather? It is a very real issue to make sure dogs are properly restrained in case of accident or even evasive maneuvers. I have let Muttley (and Lucky) ride in the front seat next to me, and there has been no problem, but they have already wound up on the floor when I've had to brake suddenly. When I took Muttley camping last June, I got a harness for him, and had the seat belt buckled through it. It seemed secure enough, but he managed to get one of the harness buckles loose as he moved around to get comfortable. So it's important to check it often. I'm glad your ramp improvements are working for you and your dog. Maybe you can provide a new product with your ideas. Paul and Muttley. |
