Speaking of Non-verbal Indicators
Last night, I was out back with Harriet, and Across the Hall Neighbor
was on her patio, sweeping. She came over to chat, and Harriet was Little Miss Manners. Until, that is, AtHN stepped back, looked Harriet in the eye, and spread her arms. Uh-oh! I knew what was coming just a split second before it happened. To Harriet's credit, it was more like she stood up on her hind legs, then gently placed her feet on AtHN's chest, than it was a full-fledged jump-on-human. But, still, it's not a good thing. The lemonade is, she's pretty good about the jumping thing, especially considering she's a Boxer, so we don't get many opportunities to reinforce proper feet-on-the-ground behavior. -- Shelly http://www.cat-sidh.net (the Mother Ship) http://esther.cat-sidh.net (Letters to Esther) |

Speaking of Non-verbal Indicators
Good on Harriet! And you -- I've been waiting to hear about her. She's
a properly socialized lady. I take two Bostons, 2yo male and 9mo female, about for therapy visits. Half the people invite them to jump up and are hurt if they don't, so I reteach 4onthefloor every 5 minutes. The elder is beginning to learn Harriet's skill at not putting weight on people, but his little sister will try to climb their frame and suffocate them with her tongue. I'm counting on maturity. |

Speaking of Non-verbal Indicators

Heh. Champ was the only dog I had that did something similar to that. He knew he wasn't supposed to jump on people and didn't but with me, in his excitement to see me, he'd boing up and down. Awww! It's hard not to appreciate such obvious delight in your existence. Harriet does the "boing up and down in front of you" routine. I think it's kind of cute, especially the way she splats herself on landing (it involves play bows, vibrating nubbins, and ginormous Boxer smiles, lather, rinse, repeat). Others might not think it's so cute, but as long as she doesn't boing *on* them, I think that's their problem, not ours. Andplustoo, she only does that for a select few people, most of whom would be more than happy to have her actually jump on them. Every once in awhile he'd propel himself forward a bit too much mid-boing then he'd kind of reach out with a paw and "steady" himself by tapping that foot off my chest. Not a big deal, I think. Others MMV, of course, but I think the occasional misjudgment of one's position in time and space is to be expected. Alsotooplus I think there's a t-shirt in here courtesy of Ms. Harriet: "Outstretched arms get filled with Boxer Boings" Resistance is futile! -- Shelly http://www.cat-sidh.net (the Mother Ship) http://esther.cat-sidh.net (Letters to Esther) |
