Hey Melinda,
Melinda, have you heard of a Siberian Husky out of Dawson who
(about) 9 years ago may have been part of the team which won the Yukon Quest? Wings is now 13 and may become a new client. -- --Matt. Rocky's a Dog. |

I'm afraid I don't, but there are a couple of possibilities: Frank Turner is from near Whitehorse and has run nearly every Yukon Quest, including having won it at least once. He doesn't run purebreds, though. And then 10 years ago a musher from Quebec named Andre Nadeau ran (unregistered) Siberians and nearly won, but ultimately came in 2nd. There really aren't very many people running purebreds. A guy from NH with Siberians is spending this winter in the Yukon and running the Quest in February, and he recently posted a query to Sleddog Central about purebred teams in the Quest, and aside from the flamewar it engendered it was a very, very short list. How sure are you that this is a Siberian Husky? -- Melinda Shore - Software longa, hardware brevis - Prouder than ever to be a member of the reality-based community |

Rocky wrote: Not sure at all - I'll be meeting the dog tomorrow. The current owner is from up Dawson way and got the dog from rescue. Sad to say, Iditarod and Quest dogs show up in rescue from time to time. I guess it's not surprising given the sheer number of them, but still. You can get some pretty darned nice sleddogs from the Fairbanks shelter, and the Second Chance League sets up foster situations for them where they are checked out as sleddogs. I suspect it's more likely that winning the Yukon Quest is some sort of embellishment which happened somewhere between the original owner and the current owner. In any event it's great to hear about an older dog with a new home and an active life. Sleddogs usually really, really hate to retire. I'll be curious to hear more about the dog. Rocky wrote: When I googled "Youkon Quest" last night, I was surprised to NOT find dogs' names on the results page. Well, figure 14 dogs/team in the Quest and 16 dogs/team in the Iditarod, and that starts to add up really, really quickly. Also, a lot of dog names tend to be reused (I'll bet there's been a "Tank" on nearly every team out there). If you know the musher you can go to their website and see their dogs (and sometimes their pedigrees). Of course that doesn't solve the problem of trying to find out more about the dog from its name, but there are people with incredible memories at sleddogcentral.com and I'll bet if you posted a query about a dog named whatever that was on a Quest team out of the YT about 10 years ago there's a good chance someone will know. -- Melinda Shore - Software longa, hardware brevis - Prouder than ever to be a member of the reality-based community |

By the way, I would be extremely surprised if it turned out to be one of Frank Turner's dogs, and I'd like to make that clear since I brought up his name earlier. Turner and his wife are prominent advocates of "ethical mushing" and they take the kind of responsibility for where their dogs end up (if, indeed, they sell them at all) that responsible "pet" breeders do. It would be surprising indeed if one of his ended up in rescue. -- Melinda Shore - Software longa, hardware brevis - Prouder than ever to be a member of the reality-based community |

Rocky wrote: Well, I'm not going to find our if it's a PB Husky. The owner heard back from her Dawson vet and Wings isn't up to date on bordetella. I was going to take him for the day while they went skiing, but I require bordetella.
