I did not know that William Shatner had a horse farm and that he is that
involved in showing them

NATIONAL ENQUIRER...MIKE WALKER...
--HE'D BE DALAIGHTED DEPT.: Buddhist dad-to-be Richard Gere's telling

pals he's
thrilled that the Dalai Lama has promised to be godfather to his child by

"Law
& Order" galpal Carey Lowell.

MITCHELL FINK...
--The star, whose vocal cords were damaged in 1997 by a bacterial
infection,
isn't ready to sing, but has mended enough to play a proper English

mother in
"Relative Values," a $10 million comedy that just started shooting on the

Isle
of Man off the coast of Northern Ireland. "She can talk," said Gene
Schwam,
who represents Andrews and her husband, director Blake Edwards. "She just

can't
sing." Edwards is in Los Angeles trying to nail down financing for his
new
comedy, "It Never Rains," starring Chevy Chase. The two won't see each

other
until the end of September when Andrews returns to L.A. Schwam said

Andrews and
Edwards recently put their Manhattan townhouse up for sale. "They still

have a
condo in L.A., and a house in Sag Harbor," he said. "And they still may
buy
something else in New York."

--Katie Couric, Tony Bennett and Drew Barrymore are about to make their
collective debut as fashion designers. And the models they'll be using
are
dogs. I don't mean that they're not pretty. I'm talking real dogs. A

charity
event to benefit the Humane Society of New York will be Sept. 7 at
Jivmakuti
Yoga Center on Lafayette St., which has been home to such celebrated

followers
of the Hindu philosophy as Madonna, Donna Karan, Russell Simmons and
Sting.
During the event, dogs from the Humane Society will parade up and down
the
runway in collars and leashes designed by Couric, Bennett and Barrymore.

Model
Christy Turlington will be emcee. I hope she has the good sense not to

tell the
dogs they'll be on a catwalk.

USA TODAY...
--LOUISVILLE -- Actor William Shatner spent most of last week here

competing in
the World Championship Horse Show at the Kentucky State Fair. His Belle
Reve
Horse Farm scooped up lots of prizes, and so did he. Among his trophies:

first
place in the Amateur Fine Harness Gentleman's Stake and third in the
Amateur
Five-Gaited Gentleman's Stake. Between outings, Shatner - who is mourning

the
Aug. 9 drowning of wife Nerine - was consoled with hugs from friends. The

crowd
greeted his wins with cheers.

--Horror writer Stephen King says he is grateful to be alive but angry

that the
driver who hit him still has a driver's license. "It's God's grace that
he
isn't responsible for my death," King said in Saturday's Bangor Daily

News, his
first interview since being struck by a van while walking near his home
June
15. After six surgeries, King says he probably will never walk at 100%

again. A
grand jury will decide Sept. 30 what charges, if any, should be brought

against
driver Bryan Smith.

--ATLANTA - Ex-rapper Mase swore off hip hop to seek a higher calling.
Now,
he's seeking a higher education. The 20-year-old, whose real name is
Mason
Betha, enrolled at Clark Atlanta University this semester, majoring in
business. Mase's religious convictions led him to leave rap behind and

switch
to gospel music. The New York native visited the historically black

school two
months ago before enrolling in classes, which began Aug. 19. He may be
downplaying his superstar status on campus, but he does get special
parking
privileges and is living off campus, unlike most freshmen.

--SINGAPORE - Ricky Martin ushered in a new era of concert-going freedom
in
conservative Singapore last year. On Sunday, the red-hot Puerto Rican

sensation
was back urging fans to start Livin' La Vida Loca. Some 800 die-hard fans
waited in the rain during a 1-hour delay caused by lighting equipment

problems.
Martin's appearance in Singapore last year marked the first time

concert-goers
in the conservative city-state were allowed to dance during the show

under new,
relaxed laws.

--ROCK HILL, S.C. - When Mel Gibson leaves South Carolina after filming
The
Patriot, he'll be remembered for helping expand a local domestic violence
shelter. Gibson made a sizable contribution to the Safe Passage Inc.
shelter
last week, said Peggy Payne, shelter executive director. Payne wouldn't
say
exactly how much Gibson gave, but noted that ''it'll go a long way toward

our
new facility we're building.'' Safe Passage plans to start building a
bigger
shelter later this year. It will have six bedrooms and bathrooms and

offices,
as well as play, dining and laundry areas for as many as 25 people.
