Default French hunting dog hit and left at the side of the road

I post this in both English, Dutch and French animal groups. It's a
message from a forum for English speakers living in France.

-----------------------------------

Last October I found a badly injured little hunting dog at the side of
a fairly well-used road. Each time a car went past it raised its
little head, presumably hoping for help. I took it immediately to a
vet, who dissolved into tears when she saw the extent of the neglect
it had suffered. It was riddled with maggots, and had obviously lain
there for a week or more, raising its little head in hope and being
ignored by all passers by, hungry, starving and suffering. The vet
felt euthanasia was the only option, so I stayed stroking him until he
had gone. I will never forget the look in his eyes. The vet reckoned
it was about 8 years old, and was disgusted it had been allowed to
suffer for so long. It deserved better than that.

She didn't charge me for her intervention. Of course it wasn't tatooed
or microchipped.

I hope there is a doggy heaven.

Well he wasn't left there by the owner, he was hit by a car. But it
was the hunter who didn't bother to find him back after he went
missing and that is what happens in France a lot. You see lost hunting
dogs everywhere.
