Default Poodle loses companion

Hi. I've been reading your posts for a few months now. I have a
question for you.

We have two dogs, a lab/shep mix (12 years old) Leika and a small
miniature poodle, Phoenix (10 months). My husband and I both work, so
the dogs have been alone all day since we got the poodle. The dogs
don't really play together. We just got the feeling that the older dog
kept Phoenix calm just by being there.

We have to have the older dog put to sleep this week. How do poodles
react to change like that? Should we think of getting another poodle
or a kitten? or would Phoenix just be jealous?
When Leila's sister died, Leika didn't seem to miss her at all,
actually she acted like it was a good riddance.

I know you don't know the dog, but some of you might know something
about poodles' reactions, because they are not quite like other dogs.

I'm waiting to hear from you.

Thank you.

Linda

I'm so sorry for your situation. I don't know poodles, but one of my
daughters had a very large chocolate lab and a little minature dachshund.
Although they lived together, they really didn't play together or interact
much. The big lab died one day, when they were alone together in the house,
and the little doxie cried. It was very unexpected and sad to see. She
actually had tears in her eyes.

i'm sorry for your loss.

If phoenix is a playful dog, he might love a buddy.
If you are unsure if you want another pet, wait a month or two and see how
phoenix feels. You'll know by then.
