"Go peepee! Hurry up! Peepee!"
I have a neighbor who is always telling her dog: "Go peepee! Hurry
up! Peepee! Do business! Peepee and get treats!" Are dogs supposed to able to urinate on command? |

wrote in message ... I have a neighbor who is always telling her dog: "Go peepee! Hurry up! Peepee! Do business! Peepee and get treats!" Are dogs supposed to able to urinate on command? It can help to remind them why they are there. I tend to tell Erwin to "Be quick". More often than not he responds by going. It can be very useful as well if you travel with your dog to have something to prompt him to pee in unusual circumstances (like on the sidewalk in front of the hotel on a busy street). Dale |

rec.pets.dogs.behavior: Are dogs supposed to able to urinate on command? It's handy, especially with puppies who sometimes forget why they're out in the yard to begin with. Mine, who'd rather play, often needs a reminder. -- --Matt. Rocky's a Dog. |

They can be taught to do so. Of course, there are more dignified commands, and one doesn't have to refer to the biological function; it makes no difference to the dog. "Petunia" would work just as well. Or perhaps better - your neighbor would be more successful using a single command; the ongoing stream of words probably just confuses the dog. Of course, I tell my current dogs to "go potty." The difficulty here was not in training my dogs but in training myself to use a different command :-\. I also suspect the original poster's neighbor does nothing after the dog does successfully potty outside. Or she brings the dog in immediately after. If that's the case, to the dog's mind, being outside means a string of meaningless words, peeing, then a slight punishment for peeing in the form of having to go back in just when she was having fun. It's important to look at it from the dog's point of view. --Lia |
