Default Tarry black stools in my neighbor's service dog

This wonderful dog has had tarry, stringy black
stools for a couple of weeks, and weight loss.

This is classic for gastroinstestinal bleeding,
but the vet is suggesting a tumor of the spleen
or liver, which does not make sense to me.

Anyone have any thoughts? This is a really
noble and fine dog, not sure of the mixes in
his breed, perhaps part boxer, part lab.

.........IMpossible to say without knowing what tests the vet ran or if the
dog is on any kind of meds.....like Rimadyl.
