basset hounds
hey everyone,
Let me describe the situation i'm in, I have been seaching for the right breed of dog for myself for about 2 years, and a couple months ago i discovered the basset hound and immediately fell in love with them.I have been researching all about them since then, and watching the basset's many adventures on youtube. I live in a basement apartment of a very large house, where pets are ok, but the the person who lives up stairs is allergic to dogs. originally i was looking for a hypoallergenic dog, but ever since i've seen the basset, i can't imagine myself with any other dog. She said she doesn't mind if i got a dog, as long as she doesn't react to it. and i've had friends with dogs come over, and she has never had a problem. She wouldn't have any contact with the dog,and the only time she could possibly come near it would be when i take him outside, i would have to go out the front entrance. so would just being in the house trigger her allergies? i understand bassets are fairly heavy shedders and droolers... I desperately want a basset, and i can't see myself having any dog other than a basset, everything i have read about them fit my lifestyle perfectly, and everyone one i have met has been the dog i'm looking for. so has any body else been in this situation? or a similar one? thanks in advance for your help, Dave |

Run a HEPA filter at the top of the stairs (or bottom). That said, about stairs, how many do you have? Bassets can have problems with those over time, so that's something to consider. -- Janet Boss www.bestfriendsdogobedience.com |

Janet's idea of a filter is good, but if (for example) the cold air intake for the house is in your area, the Bassett hair is going to find its way upstairs to some extent. Unfortunately, you may not find out how your dog affects your neighbour's allergies for some weeks. You may need to take a step back and re-explore the so-called non-shedding breeds (those whose coat retain shedded hair) which can be groomed away from your home. If it's the Bassett temperament you like, you may find an individual hair- and temperament-compatible dog at the shelter or through rescue. You may even be able to take the dog home for the day and test it with your neighbour - with her compliance, natch. -- --Matt. Rocky's a Dog. |
