the post I hate to write
On March 8, Orson had walked 1/4 mile of our normal walk when he
jumped straight up, yelped, and came up lame on the front left leg and limping on the rear left. Last week, xrays indicated osteosarcoma, and biopsy results received today confirmed it. He's not a good candidate for amputation because 1) he's now totally blind, 2) he's arthritic in both elbows, and, most relevant, 3) the rear limp. The orthopedist thinks the rear limp is indicative of a neurological problem; we hope to get his spine and rear leg scanned at the same time he's put under to have a palliative radiation treatment. I'm not ready to intro myself on a bunch of new disease-specific lists yet. Has anyone here dealt with osteosarcoma? Particularly interested in pain management and other palliative care. Broken-hearted, Cate |

Maybe hanging out there would be something you can lurk about. Estelle has been very busy with my friend's FCR and his shoulder problems, and Rudy and his urinary problems. I know she's very fond of Orson. We're hitting her left and right. I wish you both the best. Are you going up to the pet ER specialists? -- Janet Boss www.bestfriendsdogobedience.com |

Broken-hearted, Cate Cate, I am so very, very sorry. I have, unfortunately, dealt with osteosarcoma in a greyhound and a Siberian. Palliative radiation is an excellent first step. I just got a newsletter from OSU discussing pain management for osteo and will email it to you when I get home this evening - am at work now. Mustang Sally |

I thought I'd remembered that you in particular had dealt with it. Please email it to catharinerobertson at yahoo dot com. I just realized I posted here under an old email address. Cate |

Sending good wishes that the treatment can keep him comfortable and happy with you for as long as possible. I'm a little strung out from crying and from info overload--are you talking about a rottie-specific forum? Estelle has been very busy with my friend's FCR and his shoulder problems, and Rudy and his urinary problems. I know she's very fond of Orson. We're hitting her left and right. Sorry to hear of Rudy's problems. I'll always be grateful to you for sending me her way. She really, really does love Orson, and I just love her back for that. We also have the Ithaca connection, so I like that she gets him on that level too. A few months ago she took to calling describing him as "top-shelf" and my husband and I turned it into a new nickname for our boy. I wish you both the best. Are you going up to the pet ER specialists? Thanks. Yes, Keats at Pet ER/Chesapeake is the ortho who diagnosed him. They don't do radiation there, so we started out today with his referring me to the hospital in Gaithersburg, but I've since remembered that my dearest friend, a vet internist, recently started practicing at a Fairfax hospital (funny the things you forget), Southpaws, and that they have a radiation oncology program. So we'll be going there for the radiation. And I haven't had a chance to tell Estelle this yet, but when the time comes, that same dear friend will be the one to put Orson to sleep. At home, after the best dog day that his body will allow. Catharine |
