Default Dog shelter emergency in Frederick, MD

I received an email from a friend about a dire situation for some dogs in a
shelter about 40 miles from where I live. I have removed phone numbers and
obfuscated emails from this post, but you may contact me directly for more
information. I am thinking about ways I might be able to help. I might take
a trip to Frederick with Muttley over the weekend to see if he gets along
well with any of these dogs, and I might be willing to foster one or more
for a while. But once a dog is in a fairly safe place, there is not so much
urgency to find a good forever home, when others may be facing euthanasia,
or need to be rescued from extreme conditions of abuse or neglect. Yet I
think I must do something to help. What do you think? Should I try to
foster one or two dogs? Can anyone here help directly, or help me set up
something here to provide temporary shelter for these dogs?

Paul and Muttley

=================================================

Guys, I met the woman who sent this email, Loretta, a few years ago while
covering a news assignment. She is a counselor at a no-kill dog shelter in
Frederick County.

Apparently, the person who started the shelter where Loretta volunteers has
left her husband and run off with another man, and has told the husband to
start euthanizing all the dogs. 3 have been euthanized in the last 2 days.

I hate to ask because I know you all have so many other responsibilities,
but if you are able to foster or adopt one of these dogs or know anyone who
can, PLEASE CALL LORETTA COLLINS AS SOON AS YOU CAN AND LET HER KNOW.
(Email Paul for phone numbers)

Please take a look at the enclosed document with the dogs' info on it. I
had to delete some of the photos because I couldn't convert it to PDF at
such a large size. If you'd like to see photos of a specific dog, email me
and I will pass it on to you. They're all really cute, of course.

I have put the PDF on my website: www.smart.net/~pstech/Friends4Life.pdf

If you can help out with taking a dog but can't pick up, she or I will try
to help with that part.

Thanks for caring.

Best,

Laurie

Dear Jeremy & Laurie,
Here are the dogs in need. We lost two today. No one will tell if it
was by natural causes. I suspect not.
Thank you for all your help.

Dear Laurie
I am an adoption counselor for a no kill shelter called Friends for Life.
The woman who started the organization has decided she doesn't want to do
it anymore, and has instructed her husband to euthanize a dog a day. We've
already lost one.
We've begged for an extra week.
Can you possibly take a dog or two? We only have about 18 to place. I'm
now in the process of calling sanctuaries to see if anyone is willing to
take on or two dogs.

Please let me know as soon as you can. We'll get the dog to you. We have,
Shepherds mixes, Lab mixes, a Shar-Pei, Husky mix, Hound mixes etc.

I have descriptions and pictures of all.

Please call me or email me if there is any help you can offer.

FWIW, these dogs will be present at an adoption event at the PetSmart in
Frederick tomorrow from 11 AM to 3 PM. The address is 5401 Urbana Pike.
Muttley and I might be there.

Paul, these dogs would be better off dumped at local AC than being
euthanized one a day. I wonder if they can be relinquished.

Are they mixed breeds?

I'm feeling frustrated because I have no idea what to do to help.

I really don't want another dog at this time, and I think Muttley would
rather be an only dog. It was difficult keeping him and Lucky last summer,
and I finally had to have her rehomed through Defenders of Animal Rights.
They are also a "no kill" shelter, but the reality is that sometimes
euthanasia is necessary (or expedient). And in this case, the woman who
started it must have just snapped emotionally, to leave her husband for
another man and tell him to kill the dogs she had rescued.

Maybe I'll take Muttley to the PetSmart in Frederick and at least meet some
of these dogs. The PDF on my website lists all of the dogs and breeds and
has some pictures. The first is a cute black Border Collie mix, and there
is one older dog who is blind. If I knew it would only be a very temporary
situation, I would try to take as many as I could, even if I had to make
temporary kennels from field fencing. But I would probably wind up keeping
them for a long time, and some probably forever.

There are a lot of people working to save at least some of these dogs, and
I hope to tell some happy stories about the outcome.

I made the trip to the Petsmart with Muttley and arrived at 2:30, but the
dogs were not there. They had another adoption event, and the
Friends-for-Life people brought in a couple of cattle herding dogs to give
to someone, but the actual main event will be next Saturday. Apparently
most of the dogs have been removed from the shelter and are being kept
temporarily at the homes of volunteers and friends, but there is still a
critical need for fosters and adoptions.

Muttley, as usual, was well behaved on the ride (in 100 degree heat in my
truck without A/C), and also inside Petsmart. I was going to have them give
him a bath, but they needed a rabies certificate, and also it costs almost
$40. I think I'll buy a kiddy pool and lather him up outside here at home
with peppermint soap, and hose him down.

So, while I was in the area, I went up Rt 15 to Endless Summer RVs, and I
went into the air conditioned office with Muttley, who made friends with
everyone and got a nice drink of cool water. A sales associate showed us a
20 ft travel trailer that had just come in, and it looked pretty good. It
sleeps 4, and it was on sale for $4995, so I put a deposit on it, and will
probably pick it up next Thursday. I also have to have a tow package
installed on my truck to haul it safely, at an additional cost of $1500.
But I think it is a decent deal for $7000 total.

I don't plan to do a lot of camping, but I really mostly need it so I can
have a place to stay on my property while I try to finish the major
renovations on my house. It was too hot to think too much about this
purchase, but I can do some research and ask some friends, and I can always
change my mind with a refund of the deposit.

All for now. Muttley and I are ready for a snooze (he's already doing
that). I think it's "cooled down" to about 90. We will probably have sweat
dreems.

Paul
