Default Peanut at the Vet

Of course we picked the hottest weekend of the year to walk Peanut over
to the vet this morning for his Lyme vaccine update. But he got a good
report, his weight is perfect (literally...according to the vet in NC
he's supposed to weigh 18 pounds, and he weighed 18.0 this morning), and
he got to meet two other dogs in the waiting room. And he actually let
the owners pet him, too!

He also got his anal glands expressed, nails clipped, blood drawn for
heartworm test, and Bordatella update in his nose...by the time we left
he was like "nobody approach me *anywhere* please". (He's also getting
a bath later but we haven't told him that yet.)

But now that he's had a chance to rest (and drink a lot of water), he's
better.

Both the vet and the vet tech exclaimed how sweet he was in spite of
everything...the tech told him he was "awesome!". We have to start
giving him pumpkin to increase his stool bulk a bit because he's always
had problems with his anal glands, and I was pleased to find that our
local Safeway (which doesn't carry a lot of things) does actually carry
canned pumpkin without anything else in it.

Now I think Peanut and me both need a nap.

Sounds like a full day! I'm really happy to read that Peanut is more
relaxed. That's such good news.

What a trying day for poor Peanut! Gotta say, I think I'd be a
mite testy with all that poking and sticking and especially
expressing, 'specially if no one could explain to me why it was
necessary!

I don't know if this would work for Peanut, but I observed that
when Chile was being fed baby food (after she started getting
very selective about what she'd eat in her last months), her
stool volume increased markedly, suggesting that the food
contained a fair amount of fiber. We were giving her Beechnut
medium sized, mostly turkey- or chicken-based, but I don't think
they contained much meat.

If Peanut doesn't like pumpkin, you could try adding a bit of
psyllium husk to his food.

Yup! I think he behaved admirably, under the circumstances.

We did the baby food thing with Fidget for a while at one point, and he
liked it just fine but I found myself recoiling in horror every time I
had to open certain kinds of them...a pink liquid calling itself "ham"
just didn't seem right to me. (Plus baby food is *expensive*!)

If Peanut doesn't like pumpkin, you could try adding a bit of
psyllium husk to his food.

He had his first dose of pumpkin tonight...I put it in the bottom of the
bowl, under his food, and noticed that the bowl was licked completely
clean and he was looking for more. So I don't think that will be a
problem! Beagles do not seem to be picky eaters.

Great to hear Peanut was so mellow. He sounds like a great 4-legged
kid. He should be tired after such a long day.

oh thats EXCELLENT.
I'm considering using pumpkin to try and get the last 2-3 pounds of Tok -
he's ALMOST there but the last couple of pounds are hellish to get off.

He's already learned the word "pumpkin". He now works through the layer
of dog food to get to the pumpkin, licks that up first, and *then* eats
the rest of the regular food. And comes looking for more. And
*teleports* to the kitchen when it even looks like it might be his
mealtime.
