Default Obsessive/compulsive??

Hello phyrie,

He will chase it till my arm falls off,

That too, is an obsessive compulsive behavior.

Here's a dog who'd just finished a session of extinguishing thunder
storm phobia using lights as a distraction. Long ago he'd had a light
chasing OCD where he actually bit his owner chasing a light reflecting
off of a CD she was putting into her computer. After the thunder storm
phobia was extinguished I extinguished his light chasing OCD again
by using sound distraction.

It was kinda quick so you might not even notice it if you aren't
familiar
with effective non physical behavior modification and conditioning,
but the sound I used was his toe nails digging into the floor to
scramble
after the light: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gSZz1x6uqlE

There's 12 brief videos in the thunder storm session, it will do
you well to view them all.

but I need that arm to use the mouse, so I stop before then.
Sometimes, I actually wear him out, but it doesn't take long
for him to recover.

Of course not. And that's where the problem lies in
relying on excessive exercise to control hyperactive
behaviors and OCD'S.

Faster than I do, that's for sure!

Of course.

He has a pretty nice long stretch out in the yard too, but that involves
standing and I don't stand very well. I don't want you to get the wrong
impression. We DO play and interact, other than the laser light. He
loves to chase his squeaky toys, and a water bottle with a small hole cut
in the side, with some treats rattling around inside makes a great puzzle
box to work on for an hour or so.

That too, is another OCD behavior.

I understand the need to engage Kiba and keep
both his body and mind fit.

That's absurd. Excessive exercise is not apropriate for fitness
and it has absolutely nothing to do with "keeping his mind fit".

In fact, quite the opposite. What it will do is make him more
obsessive compulsive and uncontrolable.

I just was worried about the light. Maybe it's just our suspicious
human natu if we really, really like something, it can't be good
for us...

Not really. If you allow him to indulge in obsessive compulsive
behaviors he may become deranged and may develop other OCD'S.

He didn't ask for it all the time, just got very excited when it was
time to play with it. He reacts to all movement (he is a spaniel,
albeit a tiny one), and will follow the reflections on the ceiling
from my husband's watch, watches spiders on the walls, and even
snatched a fly out of the air the other night. He's a hunter, born and
bred, even if it was hundreds of years ago.

ALL dogs are hunters.

As such, he can't ever be let off the leash.

That's absurd. Any dog can be trained to a 100% reliable
come command in just a few minutes using Pavlovian
conditioning.

Once his nose is down, his ears shut off, and he
just plain can't hear you call him.

Curious that Pavlov never noticed that sort of problem?

One of his litter has already been killed by a car when
the owner's children left the door open and the puppy
dashed into traffic after some smell.

Yeah. There's a lotta that goin around.

I took Kiba to the local tennis court, thinking I could throw
the tennis ball for him in a different setting. What a disaster!

That too...

His nose went down, and all he would do was circle the perimeter
of chain link fencing, smelling all the good, foreign smells. He did
pick up the ball, once, but didn't bring it back, just dropped it again
and headed for the fence. I wish he could be let offleash to run, as
we have a beautiful big playgournd at our little school around the
corner, but he can't, so we must exercise in other ways.

That's not so. He can, you can't, because you don't know how to train
him.

He will walk on the treadmill, but I don't put him on it very often.

That's absurd.

The treadmill is in the back room where the Grands sleep when
they're visiting, and is usually folded up against the wall, to make
room for the cots they sleep on. I kind of like the treadmill, though.
I sit in front of it, with Kiba in his harness and leash, and feed him
tiny, tiny tidbits I made just for treadmill walking.

That's absurd.

He's due for a checkup at the vet's soon. I'm going to ask him what he
thinks about this as well. I know most vets aren't behaviourists, but I
respect his common sense, and he does know more about dogs than I do.

That's not sayin much.

Oh, and to the suggestion of rally or such...

That's absurd. So called rally is for dogs who can't be trained
to the strict discipline of the obedience ring, kind of like the
"good citizens test", a joke.

we live on a tiny island, with around a thousand people, total.
Not too much of that kind of thing! LOL...

That sounds nice.

Thanks to all,

You're welcome.
