Leash training a reluctant dog
We have a young dog (4 month, 20 pounds, boxer/border collie mix) that
seems to be afraid of leashes and will sit and dig in with her legs at the prospect of a walk. We've had her for a day, but she seems to be an otherwise sweet and well adjusted dog. There seems to be lots of advice for dogs that pull forward on their leashes, but not for dogs that hold back. Can anyone suggest a strategy for taking walks? Stephen |

Can anyone suggest a strategy for taking walks? Only a day? Give her some time to adjust. It's possible that over the next few days of your feeding her, talking to her, petting her, playing with her, and generally being nice to her, that she'll come to see you as a good buddy and friend, someone she'd love to go on walks with. You might try leaving her leash attached to her collar such that she drags it around the house. That way she gets used to it slowly so that when you pick up the other end to take her outside, it's a small adjustment. Obedience training is great for all dogs, both the shy and the boisterous. --Lia |

Stephen ============ You could try letting her walk around the house with the leash on by letting her drag it around for a few minutes a day, so she will get used to the leash. When trying to walk her on the leash, you could tempt her to move forward by holding a treat a few feet in front of her, and then when she walks up to the treat, praise her, and try it again. You could also try walking her side by side with another dog who does walk good on the leash. |
