Default nutrition and bowel health

During one of my Basic classes last evening, a student's dog stopped to
poop. Argh, but that's another story. Anyway, it was pretty warm out,
but not really awful and we had just started working. He pooped a
pretty high volume and it was just not very well formed. Not something
easy to clean up off concrete. I commented on that and the owner told
me it is always like that. ACK and UGH! So, I asked what the dog is
eating......

Dog is a 9 month old lab and she's feeding Hill's puppy food. I don't
usually give food lectures during class or with clients, unless the food
is clearly not working for the dog. I have a handout on feeding and the
student can do what they want with that. In this case, I would say the
food is clearly not working for the dog, so I discussed feeding with the
whole class, as well as my opinion that bowel health is a huge indicator
of things being right or wrong with a dog. It never dawned on this
owner that big and messy stool may be "off".

I have a vet in the class. It was great to have backup on my opinions.
