Which can make all the difference in the world (not to mention make it
all worthwhile).

Khan went to the vet today to have his unresolved skin issues and more
recent hind-end weakness addressed. He weighs a decent 84.7 pounds. The
high point of the visit was when the vet announced that his urine specific
gravity was 1.35. Awesome, considering that it was hovering in the low 1.2s
same time last year, and is now solidly in the 'normal' range. So, no
kidney problems.

On the bad news front, his hind left has good flexion, but restricted range
of motion. The lens in the right eye is looking thicker. The skin IS going
all to hell, and because he is averse to water, our first option of bathing
him in antibiotics a couple of times a weeks is right out. Because of all
the hair, so is going with a topical, unless he is shaved down and kept that
way (definitely not an option). So, she thinks that the holistic vet is a
good idea - the plan for now is to put him on a 3 week course of antibiotics
to clear the skin infection, and do whatever the holistic vet suggests to
boost his immune system, to see if that will be sufficient to keep the
infections at bay once the antibiotics clear them. The holistic vet consult
is next week, so we'll only start treatment after that. She also thinks
that Khan needs to go back on his Thyroid supplements, and that might also
help with both the skin and the hind end weakness issues. Since I noticed
some aggression issues while he was being supplemented, we will likely go
with a lower dose this time.

We also repeated his Tennessee panel. The specific gravity results make me
think that it will come back normal, despite the unresolved skin issues and
hind end weakness. Poor dog ended up being a pincushion. The tech who was
helping remarked that he had 'Sheltie Veins' and for such a large dog, he
was an extremely difficult draw. Other than being starved half to death (no
breakfast until after we came back) and being stabbed repeatedly, it wasn't
a bad morning. He did get a couple of nice long walks to make up for it.

The vet remarked that while Khan is unlucky to have drawn a bad endocrine
card, the rest of us are lucky that it was Khan that drew that card. He is
an amazingly good dog and a wonderful patient.

What a sweet boy. Hope you have success with the holistic method. Skin
problems can be so persistent and hard to treat.

best,

We've been thrilled with our holistic treatment of Atty's allergies. Here's
hoping you have good results with it, too.

So, no
kidney problems.

Hooray! That is wonderful news.

And it is also great that your vet is so willing to work along with the
holistic vet. Shows that Khan is the priority.

And a rave review from the vet. Wow.

We'll be thinking of you, sending healing vibes and well wishes for his
holistic vet appointment next week.

I wasn't expecting there to be bad news on that front, but it was really
nice to know that even without water deprivation, his kidneys are working
just fine.

I was a little apprehensive in mentioning it. She asked me for the vet's
name, and then nodded and said 'She's good. There is another one that I
wouldn't want you to go to'. She's done acupuncture on herself, her cat and
dog, and takes herbal supplements for herself (said her pets seemed to have
tolerance issues), so she's definitely open to whatever works for the dog.

And a rave review from the vet. Wow.

We get that a lot. Most new vets/techs are apprehensive at first of the
gigantic dogs, find out soon enough that the dogs are perfectly well behaved
(Khan more than Pan; Pan is not as good about being perfectly still for as
long as it is called for).

Thank you! I'm hoping that she's got ideas. She has worked wonders on my
friends' dogs (EXPENSIVE, but effective), and I'm convinced that one of her
dogs is alive because of this woman.

What a good boy! I hope the AV can find an effective treatment
for him. (And good news that his urine SG is back into normal
range.)
