Kiba meets the Bunnies...(pics)
Hi all,
My husband has been looking for someone to sell us a few rabbits to keep as manure manufacturers. Rabbit manure is primo in the garlic beds, and if you only feed rabbit pellets you get no weeds from seeds passed by the bunnies. He finally found some and brought three home a few days ago. I was hoping for babies, so they could become friendly with Kiba, but these are about six months old, so no pet puppy for the bunnies. I still wanted to introduce Kiba to them, if only to see his reaction to them. We don't have rabbits or squirrels in my neighbourhood, so I was interested to see how a hunting dog (if in name only) would react to bunnies. Kiba smelled them right away, before we even got near the bunny barn. He was quite excited. As you can see in the pics, he was very interested in them. He immediately put his paws up on the ledge that catches all that good manure and wanted to visit. The bunnies were dis-interested. The guy we bought them from may have dogs, I don't know, but these bunnies were remarkably calm in the presence of a nosy puppy. We've had lots of pure-bred bunnies go through the barn in the last ten years (my girlfriend used to raise show rabbits, and gave them to me to raise up for her when she was low on space) and they were way more nervous than these guys. Kiba went from cage to cage, saying hi and trying to bump noses. One rabbit moved, slowly, to the back of the cage out of Kiba's reach, but the other two just looked at him, bored. Kiba at one point made this wavery little whining noise I've heard before when he really, really wants something, and I saw him licking his nose, but I don't know if he was trying to calm the bunny or himself, or if he was even giving calming signals. He wasn't aggressive at all, just very curious. Once I saw the licking, I decided he might be overstimulated and took him out. I had to drag him away from the barn. He did not want to leave the bunnies! I would love Kiba to have a bunny pal, since our cat decided he is evil incarnate the day he came home, and she won't play with him (except in a Pinky and the Brain way: She plots his death while he worships at her very sharp, pointy feet). But I won't put undue stress on the bunnies, so an occasional visit from a puppy will be all I'll subject them to. Although they certainly didn't seem to care about Kiba being in the barn at all. I've seen lots of bunnies hop around their cages all upset with stress, but these guys are mellow. They haven't been handled much, but maybe with some time they could be pets, as well as poop machines. http://www.flickr.com/photos/phyrie/...7602686758930/ http://www.flickr.com/photos/phyrie/...7602686758930/ http://www.flickr.com/photos/phyrie/...7602686758930/ http://www.flickr.com/photos/phyrie/...7602686758930/ http://www.flickr.com/photos/phyrie/...7602686758930/ Best healing thoughts for Luce and Tuck. I didn't know it was possible to worry so much about dogs I've never met. Phyrie |

I didn't know it was possible to worry so much about dogs I've never met. Phyrie Kiba is just so cute he could probably set the house on fire and look adorable doing it. He surely does want a bunny! I've had dogs and indoor, loose, pet rabbits together. My dogs, with no prey drive at all, lost interest pretty quickly. None of them ever made friends.. Indoor rabbits can be very destructive, but it is so funny when you have company that isn't aware of the pet rabbit, and said rabbit hops across the room. The guest will pretend he did not see anything, why, nothing at all. I had one friend that was afraid to touch a beautiful black rabbit while I was holding him. I just can't imagine not being compelled to touch that silky, soft fur. I loved your pictures, thanks for posting them. Karla (spell check wanted to change Kiba to kebab!) |

Thanks for your kind comments, Karla. My sister has had a house rabbit and a house chinchilla. The rabbit I never met, although my sister regaled me with stories of chewed electrical wires, eaten house plants and general mayhem. She did have it litter box trained, which apparently makes up for a LOT of other things. I was introduced to "Chico" the chinchilla when I was laying on the couch watching TV at her place one night. This "thing" just freakin' appeared on my chest. I swear to god it teleported there. It looked at me for a second or two, then, poof... gone. I screamed, and my sister fell off her chair laughing. She hadn't told me she had let him out, and they are FAST! Amazingly soft too, when you can catch 'em. Oh, and "kebab".. funny! Phyrie |

I took the opportunity to look at his other pics. One day, a CKCS may come into my life. I keep telling myself that at some certain age I will switch to a little dog. Then I remember that I use Rudy to help me up from the ground if my knees are bothering me, and realize a little dog wouldn't be all that useful for that! -- Janet Boss www.bestfriendsdogobedience.com |

Although CKCS are adorable, wonderful dogs.. WHY would you allow looks to get in the way of practicality? Don't ALL of them have heart problems more sooner than later in their lives? There is no way i would have one. No way. I just can't afford any more vet bills. |

Don't all FCRs (and Goldens) have cancer sooner or later in their lives? It isn't all about looks. Although they are adorable (and FCRs stunning), the personalities of the breeds are primary. Spending my days with dogs I love the activity and traits of, is why I have dogs. If I were going for longevity alone, why not just get a Chi? I don't want a Chi. While longevity is a very good thing indeed, I don't think it should be the primary factor in deciding what breed of dog one wants to live with. We can hedge our bets with good testing and good breeders, but I'm convinced that much of life is a crap shoot anyway. There is no way i would have one. No way. I just can't afford any more vet bills. But nothing guarantees that. Not breed, not breeding. You've had much larger vet bills than I ever have had, despite me having 3 dogs with cancer over the last decade, along with a cat with many unknowns, and a cat before her with heart failure/disease. Like I said - crap shoot. We may as well enjoy life to the fullest. -- Janet Boss www.bestfriendsdogobedience.com |

I always have to smile when I see that face. Yes, I looked at the bunny pictures, but then I had to backtrack on the picture page to see some photos of 'the face to die for' once again. Kiba has the most amazing eyes. td |

You'd hear his wings flapping before you saw him, and people were continually ducking their heads and covering them, as though we had a houseful of bats flying around. I'd say, 'don't worry, it's only our bird.' But now a rabbit hopping though, I'd have loved to see that one! td |

I think they can be beautiful, and I don't mind looking at them, as in a zoo or on TV. But don't let 'em fly around my head! My sister had a cockatiel called T-bird. They found him on his own in their neighbourhood. Since they couldn't find the owners, they kept him. When the vet asked what his name was, my sister and her husband looked blankly at each other. "Er, we've been calling him The Bird.." So he was T-bird, for short. I was visiting again and my sister came into the bathroom while I was in the shower. She pulled open the shower curtain and said, "Put out your hand.". Like an idiot, I did it. She put T-bird on my hand! Apparently, cockatiels like to shower. I screamed and snatched my hand away, the bird hits the drain, head first. My sister screeched, and had to rescue her bird from drowning. She was annoyed, but she knew better. I don't do birds! Bats might be OK, but maybe not. -- Phyrie Kiba the Cav's Pics: http://www.flickr.com/photos/phyrie/...758930/detail/ |
