Ask the Cornell vets - interesting question on aflatoxin
[]
Every Wednesday the local paper runs a column with questions answered by Cornell vet school faculty, and this morning's was on post-mortem aflatoxin detection: We have been working on developing a tissue test for aflatoxin, but it's very difficult. We did send some samples to Trilogy Laboratory for analysis a few years ago, but all came back negative. The problem is that the toxic concentration in the food is so small (60 to 100 parts per billion) and then it takes several weeks for the animal to get sick. By then, most of the aflatoxin is gone because it was broken down in the liver or otherwise eliminated, so the concentration in the liver is going to be even lower, maybe parts per trillion, making it really difficult to detect. http://www.theithacajournal.com/apps...LE08/808270316 -- Melinda Shore - Software longa, hardware brevis - Prouder than ever to be a member of the reality-based community |
