Grandfather Mountain, etc.
Fay brings heavy rain, flooding; five counties under tornado warning

Posted: Today at 5:20 a.m.
Updated: 4 minutes ago

Raleigh, N.C. - Tropical Storm Fay has finally arrived in North Carolina,
and its remnants should bring three more days of rain to the Triangle.

The Triangle and areas west were getting the brunt of Fay's remnant rainfall
Wednesday after more rain fell west and south of the region Tuesday. Severe
thunderstorms continued to pop up in the early afternoon.

A tornado warning has been issued for western Wilson and south-central Nash
counties until 2 p.m. Another tornado warning covers north-central Johnston,
east-central Wake, southwestern Nash and extreme south-central Franklin
until 2:15 p.m.

At 1:37 p.m., radar indicated a tornado over Linwood, moving northeast at 14
mph toward Wendell and Middlesex.

At 1:18 p.m., radar indicated a tornado over Sims, 16 miles east of Linwood.
It was moving north at 11 mph towards Sims, Wilson and New Hope.

A tornado was spotted on the ground in Wilson, near Highway 42. The greatest
threat is to Archers Lodge

Redeveloping thunderstorms have prompted a flash flood warning for
southwestern Johnston and northern Sampson counties until 2 p.m. and for
Alamance County until 2:45 p.m. Flooding is possible along small creeks and
low-lying areas and those with poor drainage.

Fay's remnants have pounded mountain counties, Charlotte and the Piedmont
since Tuesday.

Grandfather Mountain got 8.5 inches of through 8 a.m. Wednesday, breaking a
38-year-old record for the most rainfall on one day in August. As of 2 a.m.,
Asheboro, Charlotte and Asheville had gotten more than 5.22 inches of rain.

Td,
Hi, Fay is such a little storm but it sure has made the rounds. I
know your area needs the rain but when it is coming down that quickly it
often drains off instead of soaking in. I know you don't need the
severe thunderstorms especially with it being tinder dry up there. I
know you won't mind missing out on tornadoes either. It seems odd to
think of tropical storms arriving in NC from the interior, usually it is
the coastline. Anyway, I am glad for the folks that are getting the
much needed rain up your way.
I am feeling for the folks that live in Louisiana. They do not need a
visit from Gustav or anyone else on the TS/Hurricane list. I just read
that Mayor Nagin left the Democratic convention to go home to NOLA and
arrange for evacuatons if they are needed.

It certainly appears Gustav is revving up. Keeping my eyes on the
weather channel.
