Lucy's BUN
Well, it was a bit higher today, but that is attributed to in-house
rather than outside lab. In other words, no real change. Her urine SG OTOH, was lower than desirable, at 1.023. I talked about food and my vet wants her on a low protein, high water food. She wants me to switch to Purina NF. I guess I will do this, as I don't know of any 14% protein foods off hand, so I'm not sure what alternatives there may be. I think Lucy is a dog who can eat anything and not react adversely, so that is a good thing. I'll be returning the EVO I bought today! Oh well. If anyone knows of some low protein food (I'm off to Google), let me know about it?!? -- Janet Boss www.bestfriendsdogobedience.com |

If not, I'd honestly have it re-run. Her urine SG OTOH, was lower than desirable, at 1.023. Normal limit on the low end is 1.025? If she had had water before the test, that could significantly alter the value. Having gone through this with Khan, I can tell you that if you want an honest answer on whether she's having trouble concentrating her urine, you'll need to have this one re-run with an 8 hour water deprivation (withhold water overnight). If anyone knows of some low protein food (I'm off to Google), let me know about it?!? You're unlikely to find any commercial foods other than K/D type stuff that is so low in protein. I believe that buglady has posted previously on rpd.health about fallacies surrounding high protein diets and kidney problems, and studies showing the importance of good quality protein in dogs with kidney issues (which I'm not convinced she has). You may also want to check the K9KidneyDiet group on Yahoo! and if you're amenable to the home cooked idea at all, look into the Strombeck book. Suja |

She had just eaten and had water as well before the urine sample, and the blood sample was taken a little over 3 hours later. I'm feeling kind of stupid now, because I went through this stuff with Rudy's urinary issues just months ago, and should have asked if they needed a fasting bloodwork or just done it. Oh well, I'll spend the money to have it done again. While I don't mind moving her to a low(er) protein food than EVO, I'm not sure we need to make this radical change given that her eating and drinking may have affected the tests. I think I'm not going to rush into anything quite yet, but will return her EVO for now, before I open the bag. The CA Natural canned looks pretty low protein, and I may just try that until we get another round of answers. -- Janet Boss www.bestfriendsdogobedience.com |

"Janet Boss" wrote in message: Nope - not fasting. ARRRGGGG!!! I think that the vet owes you one. Mine won't run certain tests if the dogs aren't fasted previously. She says that it is general good practice (unless your dog has medical issues), since there can be other issues associated with testing after eating as well (If memory serves, the fats in the food can interfere with the tests too). While I don't mind moving her to a low(er) protein food than EVO, I'm not sure we need to make this radical I'm with you on that. The CA Natural canned looks pretty low protein, and I may just try that until we get another round of answers. Because of the water content, most canned foods tend would likely be low protein. I checked my stash - Wellness, Pinnacle, Before Grain, Evo, Merrick, etc. and they're all between 6 and 9% (Min) for protein. Suja |

I don't mind spending more money for canned food if it works out better for her. Storage is less convenient, but I went canned for the cat(s) a few years ago, so it's not like I don't do my part for filling the recycling bin! My first lab mix (1973-1988) was on K/D (canned and dry mixed) the last few years of his life, and it didn't seem to do him any harm! I realize that at 12, I shouldn't be surprised to see some slight changes in Lucy, but they may not really exist either. -- Janet Boss www.bestfriendsdogobedience.com |
