Dog Poops in the floor all of the time!!
Hi everyone. I have a 2 year old male Chinese Crested. I can't get
him to stop pooping in the floor. He sneaks around every time!! He usually likes to go in my kids bedroom, which is very frustrating, when I close the door to their rooms he goes in the hallway. If I gate him off to one room he goes in there. He also goes to the bathroom weird. He squats and then goes in a circle...he walks while he's pooping. I have tried everything, I can't spank him, he will submissive pee, and I really don't agree with spanking anyway, and I have tried everything else...any suggestions?? |

When he starts circling, take him out. Congrats, recognizing a behavior pattern is the first step. |

Thanks!! By giving him the chance to poop in inappropriate places, you are TEACHING him it's ok, as long as he's not caught (which is why he feels he needs to be sneaky) Crate/tether and never give him a chance to go inappropriately as you break the habit and teach him the proper acceptable place TO go. And praise when he gets it right! Use an enzyme cleaner to clean the old bathroom haunts (replacing the carpet is even better and enzyme the spots under the carpet.. and just simply NEVER allow him free access to those areas again, and you have a start. Regulating his meals, and perhaps a food change as Janet suggested, are all a good idea. You have allowed this to happen for 2 years now, so this is going to take awhile. |

The point of tieing him to you is that he learns he comes to you to go out
not in some room in the house. Give it time and keep at it he will get it. Also put him on a schedule, take him out every couple hours and gush over him when he goes outside. Make a big deal out of how pleased you are that he's done his business outside. Also use a catch phrase when you take him ask. Like say lets go POTTY. Then repeat it when he's outside telling him to go potty and take him to the spot you want him to go in. Each one of my dogs comes and gets me when they want out and they know "Lets go pee" means we are going outside to go to the bathroom.. I've used the tether method with every dog I've ever had and it works. You can even retrain and old dog this way I've done it. Celeste wrote in message ... Also put him on a schedule, That's for food, as well as potty breaks. If the dog is free fed, I'd get him on a feeding schedule immediately. Food going in at set times equals food coming out at (more or less) set times. Other benefits are that you will know exactly how much your dog is eating (makes it easy to monitor weight and adjust food accordingly). You will also be better able to judge the dog's appetite, and so tell when he's not feeling well. Appetite changes are sometimes the first (or only!) indicator that a dog is unwell, so I find this extremely important. -- Shelly http://www.cat-sidh.net (the Mother Ship) http://esther.cat-sidh.net (Letters to Esther) |
