Introducing Harley
my new 10 month old Landseer Newfoundland puppy. I got him from a
rescue and had him shipped from MO via a private shipper. He's scared. He's missing his brother who was sent to a foster home (my husband said no to a third big dog) Bagel went to Rainbow Bridge September 18, 2008 due to a severe injury (a herniated disc in his neck that did not respond to treatment) here I am with him shortly before he got the second shot: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...0918082109.jpg we were without a second Dog for less than a month. This is Hannah who I got at 9 weeks and is/was my velcro dog http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...y/IMG_1578.jpg she's 6 1/2 now! and a delight... she was Bagel's puppy. Now Harley at 10 months is her puppy even if he is nearly double her size. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v2...y/IMG_1577.jpg he's shy he does not walk stairs yet (he better learn quickly) he never was in a crate till yesterday but he likes the crate (with the door open so far) he did walk out of the crate this morning and let me drag him outside for a pee he came in and ate a small amount won't take yummies from my hand but did take a small piece of bologna from my hand. he needs a bath and a comb out badly I think he's going to be a great dog. |

He let me put a new collar on him with a tag with his name, he actually took food out of my hand and my husband's hand (which is more than the lady that ran the rescue could get him to do) he's scared of stuff (like other people, me sneezing, cars driving by, sirens) and runs to the crate or hides behind me if we are outside. and he has NO clue of any commands or housebreaking.... nessa -- dog mom to hannah 6.5 years lab/pit mix Harley 10 month old Landseer Newfoundland (Angel) Bagel went to the Bridge 9/18/08 age approx 8.5 years |

They are both fine looking dogs. Harley does seem a bit insecure, but Hannah seems totally relaxed and happy. Paul and Muttley oh thank you so very much. Hannah is very happy and relaxed. she's a very good dog. had good training and awesome socialization. she was an abuse case and it took me three years before she would readily go to women. she's always liked men. Harley as a rescue who was just taken from the only farm he's ever known and the company of his brother (a littermate) is very insecure. I'm mom already and he will take yummies from me. He's not so sure about my husband who is a very very big guy both in height and width. This is hard for my DH who has never done a rescue and does not understand how much time may be involved in learning to trust. nessa --- dog mom to hannah age 6.5 years pitador rescue harley age 10 months landseer newf rescue (Angel) Bagel went to Rainbow Bridge 9/18/08 age approx 8.5 |

He's not so sure about my husband who is a very very big guy both in height and width. This is hard for my DH who has never done a rescue and does not understand how much time may be involved in learning to trust. ================================================== ===================== Muttley seems to be more cautious and somewhat fearful with men, and this may be because of abuse in his early development stages. He was found with a pack of three other dogs, running loose in a bad neighborhood in Baltimore, and he may have been intended as an intimidating dog by a gangster or possibly for fighting or bait. He did not have any scars or other signs of fighting, but his tail was docked (or torn off). When I first met him, my friend and I picked up him and his black Rottie bitch at the Baltimore AC, where they were scheduled to be put down. I was rather clueless about dogs at that time, but I did not sense any aggression or fearful behavior from him. But I did not interact with him very much, and I transported the Rottie to his their first temporary home. I remember that he was very happy to see her again when we let them loose in a fenced area. She was carrying his puppies, after all, and I'm sure he would have been a good dad. The next time I met him was when I picked him up at the vet's where he had just been castrated, and he was wearing a cone collar. I was to take him to the SPCA in Baltimore where he was supposed to be set up for adoption. When I asked the vet if he should ride in the back of my pickup (with cap), or up front, she said he would be best in the front seat. I had to help him and lift him into the cab of the truck, which was difficult with his awkward collar, but then he sat nicely in the seat. I stopped at my house briefly and took him for a little walk, and again he did not seem fearful or aggressive. I don't know if I just didn't see his fearfulness, or maybe I had a lack of fear and ability to interact with him in an easy friendly manner, but he seemed to get along with me right from the start. I've had similar experiences with other dogs. But I did once have a neighbor's miniature Chow snap at me when I went to pet her (the dog, not the neighbor). I am also a big guy like your husband, but I tend to speak softly and act in a non-threatening and friendly manner. I think that is important, and also one must really like dogs, and want to interact with them in a physical way by petting them, scratching their ears, chin, tummy, etc., hugging, rubbing noses, and just being chummy. I have seen that some people are very tentative with dogs, and maybe give them a couple of pats on the head and then ignore them. I think they need more intense interaction, and "playing", to feel really comfortable and secure with a person. Good luck with your new furbaby Harley, and I hope your DH can bond with him. I'm very happy that I got involved with Muttley's rescue, as well as "Lucky". I wish I could have kept her, too, but I did not feel I could trust the two dogs alone together. They would play roughly, or maybe they were fighting, and two 80 lb dogs can do a lot of damage. She was a sweet Rottie mix, and she was adopted within a week after I surrendered her to the Defenders of Animal Rights. Paul and Muttley |
