How cold is too cold for a dog?
Hi,
My husband wants to walk Kiba today, but is concerned about how cold it's gotten this week. Today it's 30.5 F. At least the water in the wheel barrow outside the back door is when I shot it with my infrared thermometer. It's damn cold, anyway, to us folks who don't get much winter at all. As a single-coated dog, is this too cold for Kiba to be out for any length of time? It was raining pretty hard yesterday, so there's likely to be quite a bit of ice on the roads, as well. We've had no snow, but they're saying we might. I saw some snow on some vehicles yesterday, from higher up the island, I guess. We're at almost even sea level, and very close to the ocean, so we're last to get snow. How do you tell if a dog is cold? Kiba is pretty stoic, so I need to know what to look for. Thanks so much, -- Phyrie Kiba the Cav's Pics: http://www.flickr.com/photos/phyrie/...758930/detail/ |

If you are really worried about it get her a doggie coat to put on. When
it's extremely cold (like -10 and windy) out I limit walks to about 20 minutes, not because it's easier on the dogs but it's all I can stand. Now my husky would sit outside all day if I left her. The only reason she comes in is because Lady comes in an she wants someone to play with otherwise I'd have an awful time getting her in the house. If the dog is actually shivering, there's your giveaway. Cold tolerance varies enormously from dog to dog, but Kiba is pretty stoic, so I need to know Stoic dogs will let you know when they're cold. It's not a lot like other forms of discomfort. -- Melinda Shore - Software longa, hardware brevis - Prouder than ever to be a member of the reality-based community |

Dylan, who was a long-haired GSD, would curl up on the deck as the snow peppered down on her. When I'd try to get her to come in, she'd give me a "what????" look, and only stand up and shake herself off if I insisted. Within a few minutes, she'd be asking to go back outside again. I know it was cruel and inhumane, but I just wouldn't let her stay outside all night when it was snowing... How cold is too cold for a dog?
Around here, its currently -24C (according to my computer), which is
about -10F. This is too cold for my dogs to be out for any length of time. For my own dogs, I don't start to think about it too much until its colder than about -15C (I don't leave them out in this, but they get walks in -15C without a second thought). Then again, they are both labs, so somewhat different. You should be able to tell when your dog is cold. One of the first signs with my boys, is they start to hold feet off the ground (as soon as I turn around though, the feet go back on the ground...). The only thing I'd recommend, is don't leave him out on his own. The problem is going to come when you're not watching, not when you are. Dale "Phyrie" wrote in message ... I may have to take a trip over to the mainland to see if there's a store that carries dog coats. It's really snowing right now, and I have no idea when I'll be able to get over there though. In the meantime, I've cut the head off an "Elmo" Halloween costume and it will do. Kiba is not amused to wear it though, although he forgave me a bit when I gave him the severed head to play with in the yard. It needs to be pinned a bit at the back as I think he might be able to snag his back feet in it, but at least it's an option. I posted a couple of pics on flickr, taken before it started to snow: http://www.flickr.com/photos/phyrie/...n/photostream/ http://www.flickr.com/photos/phyrie/...n/photostream/ -- Phyrie Kiba the Cav's Pics: http://www.flickr.com/photos/phyrie/...758930/detail/ |

The grass is still green! If it were light outside here, I'd take a picture to show you outside my window for comparison. Dale |
