Default Smart dog?

Based on a very small sample, I've always thought that Italian
Greyhounds were pretty smart dogs. Last Christmas I got a couple of
those puzzle toys that have little stuffed birds, bees, etc. that the
dog is supposed to pull out of a hole in the accompanying birdhouse,
beehive or cube. The box contains instructions on teaching your dog
to use the toy, and I showed Teddy where the little stuffies go all of
once before he gleefully removed them himself. Now, of course, he
shreds all stuffed toys and the only stuffed-type toys I can give him
are Tuffies rated 8 or above. Anyway, the other day Teddy did
something that reminded me of Tasha years ago, when she wanted a drink
of water but didn't want to put her rawhide down in case one of the
other (2 at the time) dogs might steal it - she dropped it into the
water bowl, drank, dunked her nose in and picked up the rawhide, and
off she went. So we were making blueberry pancakes the other morning,
and a blueberry fell into the dogs' water bowl. It was pointed out to
various dogs several times, and finally Teddy retrieved it. Judging
by the bubbles his little schnoz made, he exhaled while dunking his
nose underwater for the blueberry. It's no wonder he's such an
entertaining/exhausting dog.
