Raw feeders
A friend of my husband raises and butchers rabbits for human
consumption. He sells the skinned, dressed, chilled carcasses to customers who order them in advance for $5 USD each. I told my husband that his friend might be missing out on a much larger market, given the recent vogue for raw feeding. He had some questions. If you feed raw, do you include rabbit in your dogs' diet? If so, how would you prefer it presented? - Skinned and dressed? - Ground, with or without bone matter? - Dead and bled, but otherwise whole (innards included)? - Would you want the un-processed hides (which are otherwise disposed of as the guy has no use for them)? - Live (erp)? |

These folks are always recommended as a source for wabbits: http://www.hare-today.com/ A look at what they sell might help your husband's friend get an idea of what is in demand. Suja |

I feed rabbit, but mostly to my cats. I rarely feed it though because its pricey. And I only feed whole ground animal. Sometimes the fur is included, sometimes not (depends on how their tools are). I'm not sure what he charges for human consumption. The farms I buy from aren't geared towards human consumption (though one I'm considering does offer that as well), so I always assumed it was cheaper. Rabbit runs anywhere from $2.25-3 per pound. (but those pounds include innards and bones, so maybe he would make a profit after all!) Handling is critical though, because grinding enables more bacteria to form on the surface of the "meat". Those that cater to animal feeding understand that this isn't going to be cooked and keep their grinders really clean and deep freeze the product immediately. Since human meats are expected to be cooked, I would worry that this might not be as high a priority....but I understand that might be my paranoia talking. |

That's where I get mine. I'm waiting on a $100 shipment tomorrow actually. Should last me a month for 2 kittens, 2 foster cats and my dog :-) Who knew it would be cheaper than canned? |
