Dog yelping in pain but can't identify why?
Hi,
My pup is 6 months old and has been yelping in pain for about 2 weeks. He has visited the vet twice, had two physical exams and an x ray but the vet has not identified anything physically wrong with the dog. He has been taking a pain reliever and something to reduce swelling. The pup is not yelping all the time just occasionally making it difficult to isolate it to any one area of his body. He seems to yelp more when he is moving then when he is lying down. One minute he is playing with a Kong ball the next he is walking around yelping in pain. Any ideas? |

Dog yelping in pain but can't identify why?

Alex wrote: Any ideas? Yeah - second opinion. If you've got access, try a veterinary college teaching hospital, where they tend to have a bunch of specialists and current knowledge. How have you determined that it's pain, have you any sense of whether the problem is skeletal or internal, have the anti-inflammatories helped at all, etc.? *Huge* number of questions. I'd really try another vet. -- Melinda Shore - Software longa, hardware brevis - Prouder than ever to be a member of the reality-based community |

Are you sure it's a pain-induced yelp? I agree with Melinda, a second opinion is a good idea. You might want to start writing in a journal about each yelping episode, noting exactly what the pup is doing at the time of the yelping, what he was doing just prior to the yelping, and what else may be going on at the time. It may help the vet make a better diagnosis. Teething can cause a puppy to yelp, too, especially when an adult tooth comes in, and his chewing on the Kong may have triggered something along those lines. |

That's an *excellent* idea. I've done this for a behavior problem and boy, was it helpful. I didn't do anything fancy, just notes jotted on a calendar, and it really helped me get a handle on what was going on. -- Melinda Shore - Software longa, hardware brevis - Prouder than ever to be a member of the reality-based community |

Kiba, my Cavalier, would yelp suddenly while getting up or laying down. Sometimes while running. He might or might not hold up his leg in pain.. He had a mildly luxating patella, not severe enough to stay slipped, but enough to cause pain as it moved. We have since had it fixed, and he's recovering well right now. -- Phyrie Kiba the Cav's Pics: http://www.flickr.com/photos/phyrie/...758930/detail/ |

Dog yelping in pain but can't identify why?
Did they xray?
If so, follow up in a few weeks with xrays. Pano often is a pain causing issue in puppies, and because the bone changes often don't happen until weeks after the pano starts, it doesn't show up on xrays until later |

Out of the blue he can't walk on his rear feet. First the rear left foot is pointing 90 degrees inwards to the body, the next hour is his rear right foot. Took him back to the vet who got me an appointment with a specialist today. The breeder suggested it might be a pinched nerve. Looking forward to finding out what is going on. |

OT by Janet about dog show (was: Dog yelping in pain but can't identify why?)
"Janet Boss" wrote in message ... In article , diddy none wrote: snip Is your MD trip coming up? I won't come if the ******** is going to, but would love to see you. The show is at the performance hall at Riderwood next Sunday, June 7, as I had posted a month ago. I didn't know I rated 8 stars, or perhaps you were referring to somebody or something else? But here is information I found about the show: I just found this link for Yorik's public appearances, which include the Tricky Dog Show at Riderwood in July 2007. http://www.justfurfun.org/doghtml/yorikpublic.htm Here is more on Yorik, and a picture of him with Tuck: http://www.justfurfun.org/doghtml/yo..._the_media.htm I don't see him listed for the show at Riderwood this June 7. Anybody going to that? I have some friends who will probably go there with me, probably for the 1:00 show. Here's their website: http://www.ericksonliving.com/ourcommunities/rwv/ and for Renaissance Gardens for the 7 PM evening show: http://www.thecareexperts.com/locati...s/location.asp Paul and Muttley |
