Default How to become a trainer?

APDT welcomes all style trainers, correct?

Hardly. Anyone can be a member, of course, since there are no
membership
criteria. But APDT has a very clear agenda of sanctioning a single
approach
and limiting scope to a single area (APetDT). That's great and I
applaud it
so long as they don't set themselves up as the authority on dog
training or
try to dictate how all training should be done. But that's exactly
what has
happened. Take a look at the differences between the CPDT and NADOI
certification. So anyone can be a member, but not all are made
welcome.

Art Haggerty is about as far from an old style jerk-em-about trainer
as you
can get without becoming a clickeroo with rotten timing who spends 3
months
waiting for her dog to sit so she can click (I use and teach clicker
training, but there is a silly segment). Designing new approaches to
teach something is what really turns him on, a holdover from the movie
work, but the reason behind all of his trick training work. But he's
an honest man, and his sessions at
APDT national conferences on when and where corrections are
appropriate are always a bit of a flashpoint. He does get the zealots
who corner him in the hallway to call him a dog abuser, and they are
always people who don't know him or his work, and he is perfectly
willing to be rude.
