Default Ping: Liisa, any ideas?

Liisa--
Would you care to make a guess?
Here is Murphy. 9 mos. old, they're calling him a Belgian/Collie
cross. But, the catch is, he's brindle. Maybe Dutch Shepherd/
Terv?
He's just striking, even from the
crummy photo. I really, really like him and keep checking to see if
he's come up adopted. 9 mos. old, and SO handsome...I need to
stop looking, I could easily find a reason I might need to adopt him
(he's in PA, that's one good reason not to). But he's just so pretty...
no more boys...no more boys...no more boys...

I've got a post out to some Belgian folks in the area, asking if anyone's
gone to see him in person. I'm just in love with this boy, he's too far
for me (I'm all the way over on the Western US coast, he is near the
east coast in Pennsylvania).

Oh, nearly a longhaired Dutch Shepherd! Very closely, but not enough: all
the ones I have seen have had black mask (Murphy doesn't) and there is also
something (but very little something) in the overall expression which
doesn't look Dutch enough - but if there is some variation in that breed,
Murphy might fall under the standard well enough.

I guess that Dutch Shepherds are rare over there, so he is more probably
half Tervueren, half something striped. 50 % Terv, 25 % GSD, 25 %
Greyhound? Pit Bull is probably the most common brindle breed there, but
there is nothing pitbullish in Murphy.

Murphy looks like he will make a perfect obedience or agility dog for an
active owner...

That's interesting. A trainer at my club (who you probably know through
the Belgian lists) was fostering a Belgian-looking mix a few months ago.
That dog was minimally brindle, basically black until you looked closely,
and folks wondered if he couldn't possibly be a Dutch Shepherd. A VERY
sweet, bombproof dog and quite laid back (neither traits I associate with
either Belgians or what I've heard about Dutch Shepherds, both of whom are
reactive and drivey). Not the same dog as the one you've posted but I
wonder if some miller got a hold of a dog he shouldn't have.

From what a few folks have said, it sounds as if this might be
the case, Melanie. I guess there is a person that actually imported
a few LH Dutch Shepherds, and is a pretty known producer
(at least in certain circles, I guess--the person I spoke w/ does
detection/ring sport/schutzhund). He doesn't really look purebred
Dutchie to me, but then again, I've only seen a few DS's before.
I thought they all (should?, like Liisa said) have black masks, like
Mals & Tervs).
There is something so familiar about Murphy's face, and it's his
eyes. They remind me so much of Bodhi.

That was what I thought too, but wasn't sure because I've only
seen a small handful of Dutch Shepherds, and they were decidedly
shorthairs (and I've never even seen a wirehaired one anywhere
but in books!). When I think DS, I think of a Belgian that is a bit
more substantial in the face--sort of like a bit more to the muzzle,
like a GSD that's got that almost roman-y style nose. But, that
could be 1) because of the DS's I've seen and 2) because of the
type of Belgians I've seen.

Well, Melanie is onto something, since speaking w/ a group of folks
that are familiar w/ both Belgians and Dutch Shepherds, there is
a known producer (that was the term they used) of DS's that imported a few
LH Dutchies to the U.S. Now, I don't know their name, just that
they are in that general vicinity where "Murphy" is. And, where Melanie's
trainer, who fostered another LH'd DS not too long ago, is located.
Possibly these dogs were "wash outs" from protection sports, and
the breeder let them go to homes that just weren't suitable so they
wound up in the shelter system. From the description Melanie (and
her trainer) gave, the other boy was laid-back & easy going, and
very people friendly. I've always thought of DS's as being even
more "wired for work" than Belgians, and I know that my BSD boy
is, although very people friendly, NOT laid-back & easy going! :-)
He's not what I'd call "high-drive", but he's no couch potato!
I just don't know, that "Murphy" is just sort of haunting me. I just
can't do it though, two boys so close in age is just asking for
trouble.

to me he looks like a Terv. Something is thrown in there
but he looks nothing like the Dutchies I have ever seen.
Their muzzles are much thicker. They actually
in some ways are more similar to GSD in face.

I'll look for it Shelly. I most certainly overlooked
the post. He is certainly a nice looking dog. Though
whenever I hear the name Murphy now it
rather hurts. I guess that is what I get for
naming popular name? Though at
the time I sure didn't know it was such
a popular name.

Honestly, I see so much variety in Dutchies that he certainly could be one.

There is a Dutchie in my french ring club that looks like a brindle
Malinois/Pharoah Hound or something.

As a sidenote...Nic, isn't there a French Ring National or something
coming up in Washington this next spring? I seem to remember
someone w/ Malinois posting about it on the Belg-L list a while
back & thinking I'd love to go spectate. I've never watched FR before
and think it was be great to watch the Nationals.

I haven't heard anything about nationals being here this year, but I'm a
newbie not totally in the loop yet. LOL. Our Portland based club will
probably have a trial this summer that you could come see
