Default help with a 6 week old

Hello,

I just got a small scottish terrier dog that is six weeks old.

I know that I should not have a dog that young but his mother died at
birth and the owners were giving them away because they could not care
for so many (8 in the litter).

The vet tells me that I should start feeding it dog food (royal canin
junior, for dogs +2 months old) but I am still giving it royal canin
first age milk 5 times a day. Is it a good idea to continue this for
long or no longer?

I am wary of my vet because in Mexico vets seem to be behind the
times. While many vets seem (I have read) to recommend all-natural
diets my vet tells me I should not give him that but I should dog food
because it is specifically formulated for a dog..... / insert usual
commercial speech here /

So my questions really a
What is a good diet for a 6 week old pup?
How long should I continue giving him 1st age milk formulae?

Please bear in mind that the BEST dog food I can get here in Mexico is
Royal Canin. It is IMPOSSIBLE to get any of the many grain free dog
foods there are.

Also, I have an older (about 3 years) dog, and I feed him 50% fresh
cooked chicken and 50% Royal Canin dog food, is this a good means to
maintain my dog in good health?

Thanks very much for any help!

I have experience with one litter of puppies. The were not little
puppies, either. At 6 weeks they were eating puppy food mixed with a
little warm water several times a day. I believe if you think you need
to add weight to your puppy you should use the milk substitute to help
moisten the food. I think we overfed our puppies, but we were
overwhelmed and undereducated.

I am not an expert in canine nutrition and so I am not eager to start
messing around with our dogs' diet. I'm not particularly interested in
ideas that appear to me to be more trendy than based in reality.

Good luck with your pup!

Ooooh, it occurs to me that you have a wealth
of info on applying the Super Puppy program
from the perspective of a layperson.

This person might really get a lot out of
implementing this....especially since the pup
is a solo orphan.

The part of Super Puppy that I did started when the puppies were born
and primarily ended around 6-8 weeks, although we did a lot of
different things with them in those last two weeks.

Don't forget that puppies should never be anywhere you are not SURE is
not infected with Parvo before shots.

I have a link somewhere - I think Matt posted it to inadvertently
torture me with Golden Retriever puppies who could do leather crafts
and build their own dog houses.

I found it: http://www.puppyprodigies.org/VideoClips.htm

Scroll down the page a bit to see...
