Default Maybe's First Agility Trial

This was Maybe's first full trial (I'd run her in two sanctioned
runs a few months ago, but nothing serious): This weekend, she
was entered in 7 events: 2 Jumpers, 3 Standard, and 2 Gamblers.
I pulled her from the last Standard because ominous clouds were
building and we'd had to deal with a tornado the previous
evening (we were tenting) and didn't want to make the 3 hour
drive home through similar conditions.

Maybe is too fast and long-strided for Jumpers - I need some
more control to avoid the refusals. She Q'ed in one Standard
and in both Gamblers (earning her Starters Gamble title). I'm
really looking forward to returning from the Nationals with
Friday and putting in a lot more effort with Maybe. She is very
fast - faster than Friday, who, when younger, was one of the
fastest.

As to Friday, he also did well, getting all 3 Standard rounds
(the point maker in Nationals) and the Steeplechase, but blew me
off in a Jumpers and a Gamblers. Nationals, here we come.

Cool! Although I've seen some and read about others, I still don't know
exactly what all of the agility classes ARE, but have a rough idea! I
do understand the thrill of having a fast little young dog. I hope
you have a blast with her and that Friday continues his reign for a bit.

Every group has their own names for the various classes, but the
intent is similar. In AAC, Standard involves all of the
equipment: jumps, tunnels, weaves, and contacts (teeter,
dogwalk, AFrame, and Table) and is a numbered course. Jumpers
is purely speed - only jumps and tunnels. Gamblers is like
Standard but lets you make your own course and has "away"
sections. You'll often see crazy fast dogs move way up in
Gamblers before they Q in the more need-for-control classes like
Standard. Gamblers is a great place to work on obstacle
proofing in a highly-charged atmosphere.

Maybe *is* a thrill - and being back in the beginning level is a
thrill for me, too. It's been about 7 years since I've run a
dog in a Starters course. Friday will have at least 2 more
competive Nationals (though the one next week has 580 dogs
entered, so it'll be very competitive). He's in very good
shape, though, so he's got many more years of having fun in the
sport.

Thanks for that explanation. I never quite understood the "why" of it I
guess, but that makes a lot of sense.
