Default sick dog

Good Morning,

I have a 1yr old female boxer. She had a seizure when she was about 3
months old. She had another at about 5 months. It wasn't until the
second one that I realized exactly what was happening. She went to the
vet and they put her on phenobarbital but the dose was too high and
she almost died. After running multipe blood test, urine tests, and
everything else imaginable, they determined she had a kidney
infection. She also has some type of rare kidney imparement that seems
to cause her to get the frequently. When she gets one, her perky
personality changes overnight to droopy and grumpy. She looses about 3
lbs in 48 hours and becomes very stiff and doesn't hardly want to
move. She yelps even though no one has touched her. This happens about
every 2-3 months. I'm kind of at a loss for what to do. My vet just
wants to run hundreds of dollars of tests on her and I honestly can't
afford to keep paying for the same tests with the same outcome. Not to
mention, I feel horrible knowing she's in pain!

He gives her a 14 day supply of a antibiotic and some meloxicam for
her pain. It takes her a good 7 days to even start to feel better. I
can't help but think there is something else we should be doing. Once
I get my vet bill paid (it's over $500.00 right now from the last go
round) I am definately taking her for a second opinion. I thought
maybe some type of herbal or food suppliment might help her in a
preventative way. I would like to stop the problem before it starts.

We have a second boxer female that is her sister. She's perfectly
healthy and has no issues at all. They eat the same food, drink the
same water, and are cared for exactly the same. Maddie if anything is
babied more due to her health issues.

Anyone with any suggestions, please let me know!! I love her to pieces
and hate to think she's suffering because I can't help her.

Thanks & best regards,
Joann

Hi Joann,

Please read some of the links on my web page, especially the
first:
http://rocky-dog.com/Links/LinksMenu.html#health

I hope something there will help you, but I'm not sure. That a
first seizure happened at three months is way beyond my
experience but points to a medical issue.

If you're not comfortable with your vet's diagnosis, please ask
him for a referral to a specialist (like a neurologist) or get
the opinion of another vet.

In the links above, there are two discussion groups, one of
which has hundreds of members. They are a good source of
experienced information.

Good luck.

AT this point, I'd be looking seriously at
nutritional preventive treatments that
support her immune system and create an
environment inhospitable to the bacteria she
is prone to harboring.

There are some holistic health groups that
are geared towards dogs in Yahoo....but
approach them with a critical eye. Don't just
swallow anything folks there (or ANYWHERE
online) say just because they say it worked
in their dog.

When approaching alternative medicines, you
are approaching a field with little "hard
science" research (which I am ok with, given
how often "hard science research" is wrong
anyway), and based almost exclusively on
anecdotal experience. Some of that experience
encompasses thousands and thousands of
years and millions of examples, some are just
presented as though that were true....you
have to be willing to sift through and figure
out which is which.

The only holistic pet care list that I stayed
on is one for cats, specifically because they
do not close the door on ANY modality, and
understand that while some methods may be
their preference, what works best in each
incidence takes precedence over "style
choices". Because of that, there is a good,
critical eye applied to both sides of the
veterinary spectrum (for the most part), and
in areas where I am more skeptical, I have
freedom to respectfully question, or at least
state my personal preferences. Not all groups
are like that. Unfortunately some end up
sounding as shrill and unable to see beyond
style choices as some of our more insane
posters here. Watch out for folks like that:
their egos and life choices are far more
important to them than the actual health of
anyone's pet.

If you're interested in investigating
alternative treatments and ways of boosting
her immune system, I'd be glad to do some
prelim (and very rough) research on where you
could get more info.

Jo, could you please expand on and clarify that sentence a bit? It
seems like a word was omitted after "the." Gets what frequently?
What's the name of her kidney impairment?

After running multipe blood test, urine tests, and
everything else imaginable, they determined she had a kidney
infection. She also has some type of rare kidney imparement that seems
to cause her to get the frequently.

There's only one missing letter and it's 'm', she sets them frequently
(kidney infections)

Thanks for the add. info, Phil. is there any chance that the
"seizures" were actually what are called "intention tremors"? Does she
drink a lot of water? Pee a lot? Any vomiting? Might pyelonephritis be
the name of her kidney impairment?
