Just back from a five-day stay at in-law's mountain lake cabin.

Angel the Airedale has lived all her 3 1/2 years as an apartment dweller;
she does go for walks, usually off leash, in woods 3 - 7 times a week, but
this was
totally different for her: the cabin has a post-and-rails fenced natural
woods "yard" and there are moose, hare, deer, sheep and cow smells all
over, to name a few..

The new environment - or maye the trip - produced immense behavioral
changes.

* she asked for attention/petting often, and from all four people present.
Usually she
comes to me for a two minute morning head scritch, and after that she only
tolerates being patted, never seeks it out.

* she kept me carefully in sight at all times, and refused to walk in the
woods on leash
with either of my parents-in-law, both of whom she walks with at home, and
walked with
on her last trip to the cabin 2 years ago....

* she put up a huge fuss when I left the area, leaving her "alone" with 3
people she knows
very well, and her food bowl and bed.

??? Was she feeling insecure?
??? Did she smell something she thought of as a predator?
??? Does this mean she things I'm top dog?

Not a change, but a new behavior: She wore what we call a "long line" in
Norway
( an 8-meter semi-stiff bright orange nylon rope) which she trailed when

she
walked
with me on my in-law's property, as she is required by Norwegian law to be
leashed
at this time of year - and there are free-range cows, horses and sheep
grazing in the
area. She quickly learned that it was OK to tug on this "leash" since I
wasn't holding the
other end, and enjoyed the chance to bounce around in the heather,

(Brag warning)

She was also a VERY good girl when the sheep and cows came around,

standing
quietly
and "pointing" them out to us but (as requested) not barking after her

forst
warning
was acknowledged.

The most barkable thing she sw was "Grandpa" carrying water from the creek
in neon pails,
using a sholder yoke so that the pails hung on each side of him. THAT was
really hard to take
quietly!

Glad you enjoyed the story!
I wrote to reciprocate because I have so much pleasure from
other posters' stories of agility and sheep trials, and the
neat (weird) stuff their dogs do.

Guess I should also emulate you and say thank you more often because it
sure is encouraging...

Perry, pleased to invite you along up to the lake with us
if you ever come this way?

Long way from New Orleans, especially if I am on my bike. But I will
remember your invitation, who knows? I might show up.
