Do you recommend The Cruelest Miles? I allowed a book club to bribe
me with a bunch of free books into rejoining, and The Cruelest Miles
is in the current circular.

I loved it - the pictures alone are worth the purchase
price. My particular favorite is of the miner holding his
dog - I think it's the first one in the plates section.
It's not a brilliant book but it's very good and gives a lot
of breed history as well as personality profiles of people
like (of course!) Seppala. The diphtheria outbreak happened
right about the time that Alaska was starting to see the use
of airplanes for transportation to remoter parts of the
territory, and there's some really interesting history
there, too. I'd say it's a must-read for people who have a
specific interest in Siberian Huskies (or Alaska, or US
history, etc.). I certainly wouldn't pass up a free copy.

Does this mean that by the time they're all done, it'll be time for the
fall coat blow?

hang on a sec. i assume from your nic that you have sighthounds. plural.
and now i see you have enough Sibes to have 3/4 of them do something.

I already got my freebies, but it sounds as though this book is worth
purchasing. Thanks - -just the info I was looking for.

BTW, Bob and Pam Thomas of the ISHC consulted on the book
but there's still historical information that didn't make it
into the ISHC's "The Siberian Husky."

I hear ya. I thought Duncan was going through a light coat
blow at the same time that Emmett and Saber were going
through their big ones, but now that they're finally
finished Duncan has decided to explode. He should be done
in time for Image to start her fall blow.

On an unrelated note, Image's nieces and nephews were born
last week, although their arrival was one of those "yet
another reason I will never breed" stories (ruptured uterus,
C-section, several puppies didn't make it, etc.). There are
four who survived, two whites with black saddles and two
piebalds.

Ouch. We've recently lost 3 of the 5 puppies born to a female while she was
in the shelter. The poor foster mom has been through the emotional ringer.
While this likely wouldn't happen with a litter bred ethically, our pups
died of coccidia and hookworms. They were born with it which we didn't know
until it was too late. The first one died at day 5 but she was the runt so
it was assumed that's why. The bitch actually separated her so she got too
cold. All the others have been looking plump, healthy and had great
appetites. The last 2 to die was in week 2.5 and they went a day apart.

Four Greyhounds, four Siberians, two Borzoi and a Whippet. We don't
have this many dogs intentionally; we do Greyhound rescue and have
done Siberian rescue, and several of them are dogs that had nowhere
else to go. Too many dogs, I know.
