new house
question: i have a GSD. right now i have an apt and she seems to be fine
during the day. when i get a new house, should i get a doggie door so she can go to the backyard which is fenced in, or should the dog remain as an inside dog..any suggestions on what i should do? |

Maybe I am overly paranoid, but I don't like the idea of a dog being able to access a yard with no supervision. Too many bad things can happen - dog can get over or under the fence, unwelcome critters can do the same, some nasty human being can take advantage of the situation, etc. If I were to put in a dog door, it will open into a fully enclosed, small, kennel like space - enough for potty purposes in an emergency, but not much else. You'll get different answers from different folks. It really depends on your area, your set up & your comfort level. My dogs have access to our yard 24/7 via a dog door. We have a 6ft estate style fence with a cement moat to prevent digging. The dogs are concealed behind the fence, which discourages people from teasing them, and lose dogs from fence fighting with them. The gate is padlocked from the inside so that no one can inadvertently let them out. (Such as the meter reader) Could someone toss poison meat over the fence or something? Sure. But the house could burn down too. It's purely personal opinion, there is no "right" answer here. -- -Andrea Stone Saorsa Basenjis http://home1.gte.net/res0s12z/ The Trolls Nest - greenmen, goblins & gargoyle wall art www.trollsnest.com |
