Default Dog digging holes

Hello, I have a 5 month old collie/cattle dog, which I believe him to
be more of a cattle dog since he like snipping at people's heels.
Anyway he has begun digging holes in our backyard and now needless to
say our yard resembles a golf course. What can be donr to detour this
behaviour?. I work during the day and my wife spends as much time with
the dog as she possibly can. She also has a 1 year old to watch as
well as a 7 year old. Should I fill the holes in or if I fill them in
will he continue to dig the holes?

Thanks, Chris~
