Will CLOMICALM change my dog's personality?
Hello,
We have a rescue dog who is having some fairly mild separation anxiety -- she occasionally chews up something while we're at work. Since our vacation, though, it's been almost daily. However, she also breathes rapidly -- she pants for ages when she comes in from outside. She's also fairly high-strung about things. We're talking after she's been outside for 5 minutes she'll be pating heavily for about 30 - 45 minutes once she comes back inside. While she's outside, though, she always gets very wound up at one dog in particular that lives on the other side of the wall. Our dog will repeatedly jump at the wall, slamming herself into the cinderblock wall trying to get over to get at that dog. She doesn't do this with the two dogs on the other side of us or the other two dogs that live with the one who aggravates her. And, her breathing is always fairly shallow and rapid. Sometimes as much as 60 - 66 breaths per minute when she's "relaxing". She's been thoroughly checked, we've got blood tests coming back today just for extra checking, but she seems healthy. Our vet has prescribed Clomicalm for a few months to be tapered off later. We're very reluctant to drug our dog, but have trusted this vet with numerous pets for many years. Our biggest concern is that Clomicalm will change her basic personalitly. She greets us at the door and puts her paws up on me to be rubbed when I come home -- and I've read that Clomicalm helps stop jumping up behavior. I don't consider a controlled greeting when I come in to be jumping up (sorry to those of you who do, just my personal pref!). She's not going wild when she does that, we just have a ritual where she stretches up on me and she gets ear and back rubs. We had a dog before who was on various seizure medications and the first couple really changed his personality, the first medication changed him into a very agressive dog that didn't need more than about 2 hours of sleep. My husband had to take the dog running a couple miles around 2am just so we could get any sleep. We don't want something like this to happen, nor do we want our dog to be "doped up" acting. Can someone who has experience tell me what we might expect from clomicalm? Thanks, Sheri |
