Dog Heirarchy-fights in our pack
"Amberbock" wrote in message
. .. Is there a good time to step in the frey and separate 2 male dogs in a fight. They are small... miniature longhair doxy's. They are between 13-16 pounds. They aren't "yipper" dogs either! When they bark, they sound like a bigger dog. Quite fierce too... and like to hunt. [lizards, chipmunks, squirrels, bunnies, etc] But loving too. I like them much better than the short haired ones. My Alpha Male dog [Sammy] and the 3rd dog [moose]... occasionally fight. And it doesn't seem to be moose's fault. Moose is my "challenged" dog. Not too bright. One can short of a six-pack. We got him when he was 2, but he's from the same litter as Amber. He's ALWAYS starved for attention, and wants MORE and MORE and MORE. When I have all three dogs sitting next to me.... I share and pet all of them equally. But he ALWAYS wants more. [sigh] The Boys got into a tussle on Saturday. At least "I" didn't have to go to the emergency room this time! This last time I was sitting on the couch and moose came to sit with me. A little later Sammy came up and nuzzled moose, licked his face..... he wanted moose to move and he asked nicely! Moose didn't move so Sammy picked a fight. I threw a glass of water on them, but it didn't seem to do any good. My husband came running and eventually we got them apart. A little blood was shed and Sammy won and Moose slinked away to his kennel to lick his wounds. The 2nd dog is Amber, she knows she's cute and spoiled.. and NEVER gets in a fight. She's the only one who can get the better of both the "boys". If they have a chewy and she wants it... she just sits in front of them with her nose practically ON the chewy... looking pitiful and they usually give it to her. [g] I secretly think SHE's the alpha dog! Copying this to rec.pets.dogs.behavior as its a more appropriate ng for this topic. If the dogs have already engaged, the appropriate time to step in is immediately. The *most* appropriate thing to do is to stop it before it starts. If you see something that happening that will likely result in Sammy picking a fight then step in, redirect the dogs' attention and avoid a fight. While dogs will work out their own hierarchy, and should be allowed to do so, its not fair to allow one to consistently bully the other to the extent of physical violence. Why should Moose be made to bleed and slink away just because Sammy has a short fuse? -- Tara |
